Seahawks Corners Sherman & Browner Facing 4-Game Suspensions

Seattle Seahawks starting cornerbacks Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner are facing four-game suspensions for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy, according to league sources.

Both Sherman and Browner tested positive and are appealing their suspensions, insisting they are innocent, according to sources. The appeal could be heard as early as this week.

The absence of both Sherman and Browner would be a huge blow to the Seahawks (6-5), who dropped a 24-21 decision Sunday to the Miami Dolphins but still are competing for a playoff spot in the NFC.

If the suspensions are upheld, Seattle would have to lean on veteran Marcus Trufant to replace Sherman at left cornerback, and Walter Thurmond to replace Browner at right cornerback.

Ironically, Seattle is locked in a race with Tampa Bay (6-5) for an NFC wild-card spot. The Buccaneers have had two starting cornerbacks (Eric Wright and Aqib Talib, who later was traded to New England) suspended for four games for using Adderall.

The 6-foot-3 Sherman leads the Seahawks with four interceptions this season while the 6-4 Browner, a Pro Bowler in 2011, has three interceptions.

It's a Schedule II controlled substance. Possession without a prescription is indeed, illegal. It's classified in the same category as Oxycodone and Morphine.

You guys know whenever a player's agent says it's adderrall it's not official, right? League won't confirm or deny what the substance was, so of course the player will blame it on something considered relatively benign to avoid the steroids stigma.

One, they have to have a prescription for it. Two, they have to go through league channels to get it approved to be used. They were talking about it on the Sirius NFL channel, and I believe the team doctor and league have to approve it, and then the team doctor will prescribe it.

He made so many plays and talked so much trash during that 395-yard game against New England, I guess it just seemed like he was playing all 11 positions that day. Perhaps it was 22, because Sherman was taking credit for the win over the Pats so he probably was playing on offense, too.

Update: Sherman appealing suspension, Browner did not appeal and his suspension carries through the end of the regular season.

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner will begin his four-game suspension this week for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Browner chose not to appeal the positive test, reportedly for Adderall, and will miss the final four games of the regular season.

Browner was not at practice Wednesday afternoon and is not eligible to be at the team facility until his suspension ends. If the Seahawks make the playoffs, he will be eligible for the postseason.

Walter Thurmond, who was a starter for a short time during the 2011 season before suffering a leg injury, will step in and take Browner's spot.

"I've thought all along that we are very fortunate to have Walter with some background that has started for us in the past," Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. "He's an excellent athlete. He played very well for us this last week and he'll step right up into that mode."

Richard Sherman, the Seahawks' other starting corner, is pursuing his appeal of his four-game PED suspension, also reportedly for Adderall. The appeal is expected to be heard Dec. 14.

If he loses the appeal, league sources believe Sherman would miss the final two games of the regular season and the first two games of the playoffs, if the Seahawks make the postseason and advance that far.

Any games remaining on Sherman's suspension will carry into 2013.

"I'm still not commenting about it, but I'm disappointed when we lose anybody by injury or whatever. These guys work so hard to be here and all of that and you come to rely on guys and when you lose guys it's always disappointing," Carroll said. "But really where the focus goes for us is right to the guys who are stepping up. ... It's like he got injured is really what it amounts to and on we go."

Any player who is suspended for violation of the PED policy also is ineligible for the Pro Bowl.

Browner has 44 tackles, three interceptions and six passes defensed this season. He is the fourth Seahawks player to be suspended for a PED violation in the past calendar year, joining John Moffitt, Allen Barbre and Winston Guy.
