Combat Sports Festival! Sengoku Soul of Fight Shapes Up

The first Sengoku Soul of Fight press conference was held today.

The December 30th event is, as previously announced, a joint event between SRC parent company World Victory Road and the Japanese Wrestling Associaton (and to some extent the Japan Martial Arts Games Association). It is not part of the SRC series.

Three fights were announced for the event. The 2010 SRC Welterweight GP Series final between Yasubey Enomoto and KTaro Nakamura and the two semifinals of the 2010 SRC Bantamweight Asia Tournament (Manabu Inoue vs. Shunichi Shimizu and Akitoshi Tamura vs. Taiyo Nakahara).

Planned participants for the event are Kazuo Misaki, Akihiro Gono, Hiroshi Izumi, Masanori Kanehara, Yoshihiro “KISS” Nakao, Kazunori Yokota, and Maximo Blanco.

The martial arts festival, which will be carried on PPV in Japan (don’t know if the whole event will be aired but at least the MMA/SRC fights), is at this time planned to consist of 10 stand-up fights, 4~5 women fights, 10 MMA(SRC) fights, and, if I understand correctly, 3 MMA fights between MMA fighters from different backgrounds (Karate, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Taekwondo, Sambo, etc.) with the fighters wearing the uniforms of their respective martial art (there seems to be different explanations of this on different Japanese websites).

The 10 stand-up fights will be K-1, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai rules fights. They’re discussing with several notable people in the Japanese stand-up industry right now.

About a Hatsu Hioki and Marlon Sandro title fight, nothing is decided yet.

The long event, starting in the morning and ending in the evening, will be fan friendly with spectators being able to come and go freely (with passes) and other services for spectators are being planned.

FEG president Tanikawa was also present at the press conference and announced that he wants Dynamite!! to be more compact this year with around 10 fights (mostly MMA). He also wants to cooperate with the Sengoku event, sending fighters to each other. He mentioned Mizuto Hirota. He will try to help with the stand-up fights of the Sengoku event as much as he can. He wants the organizations to be more closesly connected from next year and onward as well.

I like the festival idea.

Really looking forward to the WW Final and I really hope they can put the Sandro/Hioki fight together.

Dec. 30 Sengoku "Soul of Fight" event adds Herman vs. Nakao MMA bout

World Victory Road's year-end "Soul of Fight" Sengoku event now features a heavyweight bout between American notable Dave "Pee Wee" Herman (19-2 MMA, 1-1 SRC) and Japanese veteran Yoshihiro Nakao (9-2 MMA, 3-1 SRC).

Officials today announced the matchup.

The event takes place Dec. 30 at Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo and is expected to air on HDNet in the U.S.

"Soul of Fight" is an all-day sports festival that features MMA fights, kickboxing bouts, grappling matchups and other competitions. The slate of MMA fights, which also includes WVR's welterweight grand prix finale and Asian bantamweight GP semifinals, is the main attraction.

Herman, an Indiana native who never has gone to a decision in 21 career fights, most recently competed at Bellator 31, where he submitted Michal Kita with a rare omoplata submission. Prior to the victory, which was his 18th first-round stoppage in 19 career wins, he suffered a disqualification loss (illegal knees) to UFC vet Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at an event in Abu Dhabi.

Herman now returns to WVR, where he suffered his first career loss in a January 2009 TKO defeat to Choi Mu Bae.

Nakao is perhaps best known to American fans for a 2005 run-in with Heath Herring at "K-1 Premium 2005 Dynamite!!" During referee instructions, Nakao kissed Herring in apparent attempt to get under his skin. It didn't go over well, and Herring tagged him with a right hook to the chin that knocked out Nakao and resulted in a no-contest for the bout.

Nakao, though, quietly has put together a nice run in recent years. He's won four out of his past five fights with WVR wins over Jim York, Choi Mu Bae and Henry Miller. The lone defeat came to notable Antonio Silva in a bout in which Nakao suffered a knee injury.

WVR officials also added some stand-up fights to the Dec. 30 card that feature notables from the region's top kickboxing promotions.

Buakaw Enters The Soul! GRABAKA And Team Asashoryu Clash Again

7 new fights were announced for the December 30th Sengoku Soul of Fight event today.

In a SRC Lightweight fight, contenders Kazunori Yokota and Jadamba Narantungalag will clash. K-1 veteran and Team Asashoryu member Jadamba had a very impressive performance against Akihiro Gono in his last fight.

In a Sengoku Kickboxing rules fight, 2004 & 2006 K-1 MAX champion and 2010 S-cup champion Buakaw Por. Pramuk will return fresh off his Shoot Boxing achievement to take on Hiroki Nakajima. Nakajima was the runner-up of the 2010 K-1 MAX 70kg Japan Tournament. He was the favorite of Masato going into that tournament but lost to Nagashima in the final.

In a Sengoku Muay Thai rules fight, WBC Muay Thai Bantamweight champion, former WPMF World Super Bantamweight champion, former All-Japan Bantamweight champion, and MACH55 winner Arashi Fujihara will face Shin Nihon Kickboxing Flyweight champion Mutsuki Ebata. Very good fight.

In a Sengoku Kickboxing rules fight, WBC Muay Thai Japan Super Welterweight champion Yutaro Yamauchi will take on K-1 veteran and Karateka Go Yokoyama.

In a Sengoku Kickboxing rules fight, Yuji Tanaka will battle someone whose name I do not know right now.

In a SRC Jacket rules fight, Flyweight King Of Pancrase Kiyotaka Shimizu will take on ZST’s Ichiro Sugita

In a SRC Jacket rules fight, Pankration world champion, “Bulls-Eye” Sotaro Yamada, will face Korean Lee Sak Kim.

Sengoku Kickboxing rules is basically K-1 rules and Sengoku Muay Thai rules is Sengoku Kickboxing rules with elbows and knees allowed.

The women’s fight announced last time will be fought under Sengoku Muay Thai rules as both participants requested.

They want to announce the other 15 fights next week.

Getting Buakaw is a HUGE coup for Sengoku. Says a lot about FEG and their situation.

Yokota is in for trouble. Jambada didn't fuck around when he was dismantling Gono.

The 20th Fight! Rin Nakai Enters The Soul

One new fight has been added to the December 30th Sengoku Soul of Fight event.

Undefeated tank of a woman, Rin Nakai, will take on the very low-level HARI in an open-weight fight.

Nakai is probably the biggest name after Megumi Fujii in women’s JMMA right now. She just became the Valkyrie Open-Weight champion.

Megumi Fujii is considering participating in this event as well.

DREAM Vs. SRC Continues! Maxi And Parky Clash

Four fights and one modified fight were added to Sengoku Soul of Fight today.

In a SRC Ladies Rules fight, two Strikeforce title challengers will fight as Roxanne Modafferi takes on Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano.

In the second announced SRC Ladies Rules fight, Misaki Takimoto will battle Amy Davis, a good kickboxer who has converted to MMA.

The changed fight is that Fabiano Cyclone will face old K-1 veteran Andrew Peck instead of Ryuta Noji.

Two DREAM vs. SRC fights were announced for the event as well.

Maximo Blanco will take on Korean Won Sik “Parky” Park in a Lightweight fight and former SRC Featherweight champion Masanori Kanehara will finally return to face Yoshiro Maeda, who is coming off a victory over Takafumi Otsuka at DEEP 50 IMPACT.

So between the two end-of-year events we currently have three DREAM vs. SRC fights.
