Senser's Week 1 NFL observations

Senser81

VSN Poster of the Year
*Bengals/Browns – I thought Andy Dalton looked pretty good before his injury. And Gradkowski is probably better than 90% of the backups in the NFL. I expected the Browns to turn the corner and start out the year with a win, but it looks like they have regressed. No weapons in the receiving corps, and the run defense is still shaky.

*Jags/Titans – Aside from a few late bombs to Kenny Britt, the Jags defense looks to be improved. It appears that Chris Johnson will be stealing money from Tennessee for the next few years.

*Steelers/Ravens – Ravens offense was supposed to be improved this year, but the way they cut through the Steelers was surprising. Pittsburgh had no pass rush whatsoever, and were exploited in the secondary. Pittsburgh’s offense was even worse, as Roethlisberger pressed when behind and became a turnover machine. The final score was one of the more surprising things of Week 1.

*Texans/Colts – when I knew Peyton Manning was definitely out, I changed by Houston pick in my confidence pool to 16 points. The Colts are terrible, and it wasn’t even Kerry Collins’ fault. Terrible defense and special teams, too.

*Lions/Bucs – one of the more entertaining games of the week, the Bucs defense was a shell of its glory days and Stafford looked really good. Freeman couldn’t make anything happen until late in the game.

*Buffalo/KC – I’ve always viewed the Chiefs as paper champions, and have always thought that Matt Cassell was terrible, but to lose 41-7 at home to the Bills is the 2nd biggest surprise of week 1. Ryan Fitzpatrick showed the Chief fans what a real QB looks like. But I expect the Bills to fall back to earth in Week 2, and I expect the Chiefs to wind up 6-10 this year.

*Bears/Falcons – Atlanta is another team I’ve never been impressed with. They play well with the lead when they can run Turner and force the opposing offense into third and longs, but the Bears jumped on them early and never let up. I thought the Falcons made a huge tactical error by having Ryan throw the ball so often, but it probably didn’t matter because their defense was equally inept. Cutler looked terrific, and even cracked a smile at one point. Forte ran and caught well, and the Bears brain trust finally figured out how to use Devin Hester. Throw screens so he has blockers in front of him…what a brilliant idea!

*Eagles/Rams – The Rams appeared to stay with the Eagles for awhile, but too many dropped passes and too many weapons on Philly’s offense did them in. The Eagles played as expected, but it will be interesting to see what Vick and Co. do against the better defenses.

*Vikings/Chargers – I had high expectations for an exciting game, but this one was just blah after the opening fireworks. McNabb is horrible, but its still no excuse to have just 39 passing yards. Don’t know what Leslie Frazier was thinking. The Chargers seemed disinterested the entire game, and Tolbert scored enough to pull it out.

*Seattle/SF – The Niners played conservative against a terrible opponent and won. Amazing that Seattle is a defending divisional champ, no?

*Cards/Panthers – I didn’t see this game, but Cam Newton’s 400+ passing yard day has to rank as the #1 surprise of the week. Still, the Panthers lost to a poor Cards team.

*Giants/Skins – Why does Tom Coughlin allow Eli Manning to pass the ball? Why does Brandon Jacobs get used so infrequently? Rex Grossman of all people carved up New York’s injury weakened secondary, and Tim Hightower of all people gave his team consistent yardage. The Giants looked pretty bad. I thought they would waltz to at least 2nd in the NFC East and vie with Philly for the title, but I have to reconsider now.

*Jets/Cowpokes – couldn’t stay up through all the pre-game hoopla. Sanchez = luckiest QB ever. Romo = unluckiest QB ever.

-I got Ryan Kerrigan as the Defensive Rookie of the Year going into the clubhouse.

-The Jaguars/Titans game was so incredibly boring and nondescript, who cares who won? Both teams just looked incredibly inept. The Jaguars actually played well in the first quarter...only to get a lead and shift into neutral and coast the rest of the way. I wouldn't say they are "improved"...I'd say they are the same team they were last year, but they just played the tacks, who are one of the worst teams in the league. With that said, its good to see Kenny Britt make me look like an expert talent evaluator.

- Cam Newton had one of the best performances by a rookie quarterback I've ever seen. Number aside, he just made plays. He looked like he belonged and integrated well into a pro style offense. Didn't expect that considering the shortened off-season and the coaching change.

- Colts will win 2 games if Peyton is out all season.

- The Vikings passing game is awful.

The combination of Witten being too lazy to dive for 6/Leonhard being a cunt/Austin not knowing how to go back shoulder/Romo not understanding to just hold the ball/Miracle punt block TD/Romo playing catch with Revis....cost me $50.

Fuck off Week 1.

Is that bet worse because its in Canadian dollars?

The run game was getting them no where, he had no choice BUT to throw the ball. Shitty field position for majority of the game didn't help either.

Yeah, Michael Turner averaged only 10 yards per carry. After Burner gained 53 yards at the start of the third period on a run, he handled the ball only once on the next seven plays. Huh? It was still a game at that point...had Atlanta scored a TD they would have been behind only 16-10. As it stood, they had to settle for a FG and gave up a TD on the Bears next possession, so the score was 23-6. Turner ran the ball one more time after that...thats inexcusable.

Rams/Eagles - I was willing to give Steve Spagnuolo a clean slate this year. He hired Josh McDaniels, an aggressive o-coordinator, and now had two years of learning the job under his belt. My 'clean slate' was destroyed before the ball was even kicked off Week 1, as Spags left #1 pick DE Robert Quinn in active, despite being healthy and following a good preseason. Also scratched was WR Danario Alexander, the teams only deep threat, leaving the Rams with (surprise!) only four active WR's once again. And like clockwork, the Rams lost a WR to injury (Danny Amendola), and had to finish the game playing catch up with three WR's (one being ineffective rookie Greg Salas).

And it also appears Spags has handcuffed McDaniels, as the Rams offense looks like a carbon copy of the bland Pat Shurmur offense from the last two years...dink & dunk, take zero chances, 'give up' runs on third down. Even when the Rams ran a trick play, a reverse flea flicker, it was designed to gain a whopping 6 yards.

Jackson, hurt. Amendola, hurt. Bradford, hurt. J Smith, hurt. Mickell, hurt.

This season is a disaster already. Just go 4-12 so we can fire this clown. Spags must go.

Donovan McNabb - Somebody bump the 'McNabb signs with Vikings thread' so we can make fun of all you fools who actually though this bum could still play. McNabb stinks.

Kerry Collins - Somebody bump the 'Manning neck injury' thread so we can make fun of all you fools who thought this was a great signing. Like I said, not a significant upgrade from the two bums they already had.

Luke McCown - Somebody bump the 'Garrard cut' thread so we can laugh at all you fools that think McCown was some sort of major drop off in talent. Garrard and McCown are essentially the same.

Michael Vick - If you can keep this fool in the pocket (granted, a big if), Eagles are done. The Rams came out blitzing like crazy, from all angles, and Vick struggled badly. Inexplicably, defensive guru Spags called off the dogs (get it? :bad joke: ), went with a three man rush, and Vick turned the game into the backyard shit that he thrives under. The Rams would consistently get the Eagles in 3rd & long, then rush three and watch Vick run for first downs. When under duress or kept in the pocket, Vick makes bad decisions and still can't throw an accurate ball beyond 15 yards. And another thing, the Eagles can not stop the run, and this will be a huge problem moving forward. Those no name LB's are bad and were eaten alive by the Rams G's.

"You play, to win, the game!"

What exactly did Luke McCown do yesterday

Didn't throw any interceptions and threw a key pass to Mike Thomas at the end of the game to pick up a first down which helped the Jags pin the Titans on the 1 yard line to start their final drive. Also he had more than 39 yards passing.

Lol, Turner was on the sidelines for a couple plays after that run. Which is why you see J. Rodgers in there (Should of had Snelling in there, I dont know what the fuck they were thinking).

Falcons run, run, pass way too much, Im not surprised they chose to run, pass, pass after they had JUST ran, ran, passed.. Just too bad they didn't convert.

I ordered NFL GamePass this season so I've been able to watch many more games then I used to... Here are my week 1 thoughts.

*Saints/Packers This was an awesome game to watch. Both offenses know how to move the ball and it was a pleasure to watch. Aaron Rodgers slightly outplayed Drew Brees in this one and it looks like the Pack may end up NFC champions once again.
Fantasy Outlook: Robert Mecheam will get plenty more looks during the next 4-5 weeks since Coleston will be out with a broken collarbone. Try to pick him up if you can. As far as Ryan Grant goes, it looks like he will no longer be the point producing fantasy RB he once was now with a split backfield.

*Steelers/Ravens This game really surprised me. I didn't expect the Steelers offense to come out and only put 7 points up on the board and at the same time I didn't expect the Ravens O to put 35 up either. However even with the win by the Ravens this division will probably still come down to the wire. No sure bets here.
Fantasy Outlook: Ray Rice is a stud. Especially in PPR leagues. If he can put up 100 yards vs. the Steelers D he can put up 100 yards against any D. Through the air, Boldin seems like he will have a breakout year now with the release of fellow WR Derick Mason and pass-catching TE Todd Heap.

Falcons/Bears I don't know how the Bears and Jay Cutler can get sacked so much and allow so much pressure and still win games... tough defense that didn't allow ATL to do much at all and good special teams always seems to do the trick. Still fun the watch the Mike Martz offense because you never know how successful or unsuccessful it will be each week.
Fantasy Outlook: If you don't have a good backup QB, Jay Cutler seems like a solid pick. He will get sacked and pressured often but he still puts up OK numbers, especially for a backup. I usually don't like rookie receivers, but Julio Jones looks like he will have a solid season beside Roddy White as well.

*Colts/Texans If the Texans dont make it to the playoffs this year, I don't know if they ever will. Colts look absolutley horrible with Collins at the helm, but that was to be expected since they never played a backup QB in a real game situation in ages. Texans looked real good on both sides of the ball.
Fantasy Outlook: I was really disappointed by the performance of Owen Daniels, but his numbers should pick up now with Kevin Walters injured for 10-12 weeks. I'd also stay away from any Colt player not named Wayne until Manning comes back.

*Bills/Chiefs Did we really just see the Bills offense move the ball up and down the field like that? Wow. I knew Fitzpatrick was an OK-passer but he really played like an above-average quarterback this sunday. The Chiefs... well... they rely so much on their ground game that if it doesn't work then their whole offense doesn't work. What's worse is that the Chiefs couldn't get anything going against a Bills defense that is consistently ranked last in rushing defense year in and year out.
Fantasy Outlook: Depending on the matchup, Fitzpatrick is moving into starter material for deep 12-14 team leagues... But really, the biggest surprise is that TE Chandler that came out of nowhere to snag a couple catches and two TDs. Pick him up on your waiver wire if you can and hopefully the Bills will continue to throw his way.

*Panthers/Cardinals Cam Newton looked like a pro. He already looks like he has a connection with Steve Smith and loves throwing his way. His passes and reads were pretty simple, but he hit his receivers whenever he had to. On the other side of the ball, we had to wait until the second half for Kevin Kolb to finally do something. I thought he would be hooking up with Fitz pretty often but couldn't because the Panthers would constantly double team him. A little worrisome...
Fantasy Outlook: Kolb still ended up with a decent amount of points because of that long TD pass to Early Doucet, which saved his day. Still, Kolb is keeping because during the fantasy playoff weeks he faced the Bengals and the Browns. By then hopefully everything will be shored up. Also, Beanie Wells looked like he's finally hitting the hole hard and now I regret passing on him in my fantasy draft.

*Vikings/Chargers McNabb and the whole passing game sucked. The coaches were keeping the game plan simple and it just wasn't producing any yards. A lot of things will have to change in order for the Vikings offense to be where they want to be. The Chargers, on the other hand, have a great offense but their special teams still seems to be their achilles heel. With a Vikings offense that couldn't pass for dittly-squat, it was just a matter of time until Phillip Rivers was able to take the lead and seal the game.
Fantasy Outlook: Since McNabb couldn't complete a pass, TE Shiancoe finished the game with 0 catches and only 1 look his way. I don't think he will be able to produce much this season under this kind of offensive production. Matthews and Tolbert both seem to share the workload about equally but Tolbert really had a more productive game on Sunday. I'm not sure if this was just a one week deal or if we can expect more of the same every week. Matthews is still dangerous and OK player in PPR leagues.

*Cowboys/Jets The Jets and Sanchez always start off so slow but then always finds a way to win it seems. Romo started off good and always finds a way to screw it up it seems. I laughed when he threw a pick in the final minutes to seal his team's fate. Everything looked pretty normal to me.
Fantasy Outlook: Felix Jones looks like he has a solid grasp on the running back situation. Choice was used a few times but didn't produce much and Murray was used only once or twice. If Jones can get this amount of workload AND get the goal-line carries then he will be golden this year. Tomlinson really surprised me because it looks like he still has some gas left in him.
