Shanahan and staff officially fired by Redskins

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan and his staff were fired Monday morning following a meeting with team owner Dan Snyder. The embattled coach, who put the finishing touches on a 3-13 record with an uninspiring loss to the Giants on Sunday, leaves the organization with a 24-40 record, and that includes the 7-0 finish to the 2012 season thanks, in large part, to quarterback Robert Griffin III.

“Redskins fans deserve a better result,” Owner Daniel M. Snyder said. “We thank Mike for his efforts on behalf of the Redskins. We will focus on what it takes to build a winning team, and my pledge to this organization and to this community is to continue to commit the resources and talent necessary to put this team back in the playoffs.”

Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen added: “We are going to take a smart, step-by-step approach to finding the right coach to return the Redskins to where we believe we should be. We will analyze accurately and honestly all of the decisions that were made over the past year."

Shanahan made it clear in recent weeks that he had no plans to resign. That may have something to do with the $7 million he has remaining on his contract, as well as the fact that he'd like to fix the mess he's created in his four years in Washington.

"I've told you from Day 1, I love these guys," the coach said last week. "We've been working extremely hard to put this thing together. We've had a couple of bumps, which we all know, with the salary cap [penalty]. But I'm looking forward to building this team. Like I said, I'll get the chance to sit down with Dan at the end of the season and we'll go from there."

With Shanahan now out of picture, RG3's coach at Baylor, Art Briles, could be in the mix to replace him.

Shanahan, who was hired before the 2010 season, becomes the Redskins' latest high-profile coach to not work out. He follows names like Norv Turner, Marty Schottenheimer, Steve Spurrier and Joe Gibbs out the door.

I know Snyder didn't want to spend $13 million to make this happen, but he had to. The power struggle, or whatever you want to call it between him and Shanahan has left the team in disarray. Though there will always be mixed reports of what happened, I think it's safe to say even the perceived notions of Snyder going back to his old ways was enough to make Shanahan worry about his job security.

One thing is for sure, we have to get away from the status quo. Cut some of the veterans who have been here for a while. Bring in a talent evaluator to work with Allen, and have the new coach not involved in personnel decisions. Do NOT bring in Art Briles, as it would only feed the perception that RGIII runs this team. Do bring in a younger, innovative offensive mind who can work with RGIII. Someone like Darrell Bevell or Greg Roman would be the two that I would pursue.

I think Shanahan was overhanded the way he tried to handle RGIII, but that's me personally. From Day 1, it was Shanahan trying to hold back Snyder and I think he did way too much with RGIII. He handled situations the same way he handled them with Albert Haynesworth, and you just can't do that with a younger QB trying to prove himself in the NFL.

Yes it is. It is certainly the worst decision in the history of the Snyder Era. How they fire a guy who started 0-5 and turned the season into an 8-8 win, despite wholesale changes to the roster. Not only do they fire Schottenheimer, but they do it for an unproven Steve Spurrier.

I am disappointed that Haslett and Morris and others have been given a stay of execution if you will. The bottom line is that the team needs to move on from everyone associated with Shanahan, unless it's an obvious fit like Lovie Smith being hired as head coach, and retaining another Tampa 2 coach in Morris. Even then I would question it. Chris Foerster is a great offensive line coach and did wonders with a unit that contains only one elite talent, but I would even say he should be out.

Interesting to see that Bruce Allen has been the one to have contact with reporters and doing press conferences. Aside from his statement this morning to the press, Snyder is not available to press. Allen has also said that personnel decisions now lie with him. I thought they would bring in another GM, but they have a highly-touted group of executives in the personnel department and AJ Smith is a senior executive. I think that brain trust could be enough.

Early reports from the Post are saying Lovie Smith is a candidate, but beyond him fulfilling the Rooney Rule interview requirement, I can't see him being a serious interview. His skill set is defense, and we need a head coach who is going to be involved more with the offense and working with RGIII. Also mentioned was Bill Cowher and that the Redskins have already reached out to his representatives, but I can't see him getting involved in this quagmire. I also want someone who has not been a head coach before at the NFL level, and not someone directly from the NCAA either.

Lovie i can see and would entertain.
Cowher; i could not see being a good fit.

Schottenheimer firing was dumb but Zorn is almost like a Dead Heat.
