http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/111358854.htmlThe winter meetings don’t officially start until Monday but the Brewers already have struck to address their starting pitching needs.
A good source told me that the Brewers have acquired right-hander Shaun Marcum from the Toronto Blue Jays. I don’t know what the Brewers are sending to Toronto in exchange but the source told me it involved minor-league pitching prospects. That makes sense to me because to acquire established pitching, you usually have to send young pitching back.
Contacted Sunday night in his hotel room in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said he couldn't confirm the trade but he certainly did not deny it.
"I can't say anything about it, really," said Melvin. "It's not completed yet."
Players must undergo physical examinations to complete trades, and that's probably what's stopping it from being official at this point.
Marcum, who will be 29 on Dec. 14, went 13-8 with a 3.64 ERA in 31 games for the Blue Jays this season. In 120 major-league games, including 95 starts, he has a 37-25 record and 3.85 ERA, much of it pitching in the tough AL East.
Marcum went 12-6 with a 4.13 ERA in 2007 and then 9-7 with a 3.39 ERA in 2008 before undergoing Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery that September. He did not pitch in 2009 but made a full recovery and threw the ball well in 2010. In 195 1/3 innings, he allowed only 181 hits and 43 walks while striking out 165 hitters. He had a solid 1.24 WHIP and .242 opponents batting average.
Marcum was selected in the third round of the 2003 draft. He has two more years before he can be a free agent and made $850,000 last season.
I'm excited, but I'm not sure how I feel about the trade yet. I have to wait until we find out what prospects are headed to Toronto. As long as we didn't give up Jake Odorizzi, it should be alright.
