Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman has agreed to a four-year contract extension that will make him the highest-paid cornerback in the league, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora has confirmed. The news was originally reported by Fox Sports' Jay Glazer.

Sherman -- who self-reports that his deal is worth a total of $57.4 million with $40 million guaranteed -- also has weighed in on the situation.

Wrote Sherman on his website: "With this chapter closed, I can continue to focus on what is important -- defending our Super Bowl Championship and being the best cornerback in the NFL. This is a great moment for my family, foundations and the people who supported me to this point. Hard work and execution got me to this moment, the Seattle Seahawks have backed up that respect with this contract."

The contract isn't a surprise. Last month La Canfora reported that the sides were nearing a deal and hoped to finish negotiations before the NFL draft began.

As La Canfora noted, the deal would be richer than the $12 million salary the Patriots will pay Darrelle Revis in 2014.

Sherman made $555,000 in 2013, and entering the final year of his rookie contract was scheduled to earn a $1.431 million base salary this season.

No defense in the league has a secondary comparable to Seattle's .. and Thomas and Sherman are equally important. Sherman is good enough on his own to take away a whole side of the field.. Thomas' playmaking ability lets him take away the other side of the field with Chancellor being a force in run defense as well as defending the seams.

Fact is.. there are no 6-3 shut down corners in the league.. Richard Sherman is it. Thats why he got paid accordingly.

If there was a corner who didn't allow a single catch over the course of an entire season we'd still have people spewing the same tired CB's aren't worth the money argument. No surprise this thread went in the direction it did. This secondary just dominated the highest scoring offense in the history of the league on their way to a Superbowl victory and Richard Sherman had as much to do with that as anyone. He's worth it.
 
Agree with Hass, Sherman is in a class of his own. He shuts down the field, but he's an extremely physical corner, and the rest of the Seahawks secondary is the same way. That is what differentiates them from everyone else- they can cover, but they can also jam receivers, out-muscle them at the snap and throw their entire game off. It's going to be extremely hard to copy that style, because the players they have are so rare to find with their combined skill sets.

bullshit..seattle is no better then the officials allow them to be. Its very ridiculous to compare him to other top Corners at this stage. If he stays at the top in all the categories next year i'll believe some of the hype but I bet he starts looking real pedestrian each year coming up.

So what about his 2012 season? Would love to see if you can find the Burnrate stat that I've seen posted in some places, but it's part of a football saber metric site.
 
Best corner in the league on the best defense in the league that dominated the best offense in history...

Not only that but he works hard and us clearly a leader and captain on that team. His confidence and attitude is clearly contagious. Well deserved.

Larry, why do you think earl Thomas and man chancellor are able to fly up on run support or play robber so much? Vicious pass rush + 6'3" lock down corner = sacks and smacks
