I like the lottery, but right now, it is flawed. It should be just the worst five teams in the lottery. The worst team getting the best chance to get the top pick. When some team that barely missed the playoffs by one game or is in a new/top market gets the top pick, people immediately call shenanigans. This way, it limits it to the bottom five only.
Most importantly, though, the ball selection should be live. Put in say 30 balls for the worst team, 25 for the next, then 20, 15, and 10. The first ball picked gets the first pick, second gets second, and so on.

I agree with Jeremy. It should really reward the worst of the worst. Otherwise, you get the scenario where half the league at the end of the year is trying to tank to get into the lottery. Granted, you could say that the tanking just gets moved down and then you have teams tanking EVEN more to get into that bottom five but I feel the gap would be far too large for that to happen.
A 34-win Toronto team is going to be hard-pressed to get as bad as quickly as a 20-win Orlando team for example.

It's too easy for one great player to affect the game in basketball. I think next year's draft would be a good example of why this can't work. Teams would be benching guys the second their record dropped under .500 for a shot at Parker/Smart/Wiggins.

My inside sources are telling me that when LeBron left the Cavs he told Stern that he would leave the NBA for the Japanese league if Stern didn't assure him that the Cavs would get the #1 pick a couple of times to counterbalance his awesomeness.

Lol. My brother is a conspiracy theorists by nature, but he's even worse when it comes to the NBA. He thinks everything is fixed, yet he still watches. We just spoke about this today. His actual theory is that Stern wanted to get the Cavs the top pick so they would have somebody to pair with Kyrie Irving and entice LeBron to come back to Cleveland when his contract is up in Mia. My first question was, supposing this is even remotely possible, then why would he rig this year's lottery which everyone thinks is weak at best with no impact players? I didn't really get an answer.
Bonus theory: Back at the beginning of the season when OKC traded Harden he told me it's because "they" wanted to make it easier for Mia to repeat.
