Sidney Crosby Signs $100 Million+ Extension

The Pittsburgh Penguins are expected to announce on Sunday that captain Sidney Crosby has signed a contract extension worth over $100 million with an average annual salary of close to $9 million.

Crosby, 24, was entering the final season of a five-year, $43.5 million US contract extension signed in 2007. For each of the first four seasons of the last extension, Crosby was paid $9 million, and $7.5 million in 2012-2013.

Crosby, who has already won the Hart Trophy, the Art Ross and Rocket Richard Trophies and the Stanley Cup before his 25th birthday, missed the second half of the 2010-11 season and most of 2011-12 because of a concussion and neck injury.

He played the final 14 games of last season (on top of the eight he played in the first half of last season), tallying six goals and 19 assists in that stretch. He also had three goals and five assists in six playoff games.

i read even if he gets hurt on the 1st game of 2012 season and can't play again he cost against the cap for the rest of the years.

They must think it's funny to keep doing that. Crosby is one heck of a player, but that is a big investment to make in a guy who has a history of concussions.

Honestly, they had to do it. It is Sidney Crosby. You can't just not give him a sick deal and have him walk at some point, though I doubt he would ever not be a penguin. I'm sure also there will be something in the next CBA that allows you to buyout a player if needed, because I know they were talking about it in terms of Gomez, and other insane contracts that people want off the books. So that could be an option. He is the face of hockey, you can't insult that with a shit contract.

I agree you can't insult him, but not re-signing him because of the risk of a concussion is a legit option. Either way you cut it, its a risk for the Pens. I would have held off until further in the off-season. If the Pens could bring in Parise, that would be a huge move and could allow them to consider letting Crosby walk if he suffers another concussion this season. Chances are, that won't happen, but you never know with head injuries. Crosby could be the next Lindros, but he may never suffer another one. If you have another season to work with, let it play out.

They had to keep him, even with the brain risk. There's no way they can tell their fans they lost out on Crosby because they were scared for his safety....then potentially watch him go elsewhere and win more Cups. That risk alone handcuffs them.
