Skip Schumaker Traded to the Dodgers

The Dodgers have acquired Skip Schumaker from the Cardinals, a source tells Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times (via Twitter). Cards General Manager John Mozeliak recently acknowledged that the utility man was a trade candidate. It is not yet known what the Cards will receive in return.

Schumaker, 32, will earn $1.5MM in 2013, the last year on his contract. The Twins were also reportedly interested in the left-handed hitter who owns a .345 career on-base percentage, but has struggled to hit lefties. The emergence of young talent in St. Louis ultimately led to Schumaker's exit after eight big league seasons.

Schumaker posted a .276/.339/.368 slash line last season in 304 plate appearances. The veteran has experience playing second base as well as all three outfield positions.

Cardinals look like they'll receive AA shortsop Jake Lemmerman in return.

Punto was already on the roster from last year. Still had a year left from the trade.

Uhhhhh.... Yeah because THATS clearly why they did this..? :ukiddingme:

He's obviously just going to back up Mark Ellis and play off of the bench. Ellis sucks against righties and Shumaker has a career .350+ OBP against righties so there you go. I'm sure Mattingly will just be making him bunt in the pitchers' spot in the 8th inning most nights... Maybe pinch run. Stupid shit that won't make a difference. Maybe he'll play, at most, 6 games of OF next year, too.

Clearly not a pickup to get excited about, but considering the Dodgers gave up a AA Shortstop who's got about 0% chance of sniffing the majors, it's meh. Very low risk, mediocre reward situation. Cardinals don't care because they apparently have younger guys being blocked by Shumaker so it's basically "salary relief" in the form of a million and a half.

Yeah, Skip fell out of favor with Mozeliak mid-way through the season for whatever reason, which is why he saw his playing time decrease more and more despite hitting .320 at one point. With Daniel Descalso, Matt Carpenter attempting to learn the position to get on the field more and the arrival of 2011 first round pick Kolten Wong as early as July, there just wasn't room for Skip on the roster.
