Smith Booed At 49ers Training Camp

Mercury News - Alex Smith ran the 49ers' second-unit offense on Saturday, got booed loudly several times after making throws nowhere near his receivers, and Mike Singletary loved it, according to Tim Kawakami.

“Outstanding,” Singletary said later of the boos.

He said he wants to see Smith endure all kinds of things and see how he reacts. Today, Singletary said he was happy with Smith’s reaction.

Smith’s response, when we asked about it: “That’s part of the deal of playing quarterback.” He did allow that he was a little surprised the crowd was as big and as loud as it was for the morning session.

Had he been given time to develop and had some decent coaching (best he had was Norv for one year), he might have been a decent QB.

No way he should have gone #1 overall, though.

No, it isn't, but I could make a lot more sure-fire positive predictions for the 49ers. It takes more balls to say that than it does to say Patrick Willis will lead the league in tackles. We're all homers to one extent or another. I believe Alex Smith has the talent to be a top 5 QB in the NFL, and I believe he's been grossly mishandled in his first four seasons, not to mention outright mistreated. He has everything you want in a QB... mobility, intelligence, leadership, accuracy, underrated arm strength, and he's 6'4". From the measurable, he's got everything you want.. but he's played under 4 different offensive coordinators, a head coach that didn't like him and made a point of calling him out every chance he could (how do you become the leader of a team when the head coach undermines you at every opportunity?), and he's played in 3 different systems.

You cannot develop a quarterback that way. This year, they're keeping the verbiage from last year (meaning no more memorization), and simply changing the scheme. All he's gotta do is execute. All reports out of OTAs were positive, that he was impressing people. He sat out last year, finally healed.

Maybe he'll be terrible, or maybe he'll finally continue the development he showed under Norv Turner. Maybe Frank Gore will finally be the center of the offense so he can develop. Maybe the 49ers finally have a deep and talented enough receiving corp that they wouldn't make Joe Montana look terrible. A lot of maybes, but I think it comes together for him this year.

If not, Shaun Hill is above average. He can get the 49ers to the playoffs in that division. So that prediction stands either way.

Very bold prediction, I can see 49ers as a 10 win team because history says the super bowl runner up usually falters. I can see Arizona having trouble, and I for sure do not believe in Seattle. It is funny that people think TJ will bring up that team so much. I do not see it. But Smith as a Pro Bowler? LOL , first he has to even think about starting on his own team which he probably will not do.

I dont think Seattle's problem is their WR's. Its their backfield. Hasselbeck aging, Julius is not a number 1, TJ Duckett, and a 3rd down back(Cant think of his name).

That projects to 470 completions on 587 attempts for 4,075 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions over a full season. Oh, and a record of 11-5.

And keep in mind, over the past two years, Hasselbeck has had the better receiving corp and offensive line (though one of those will change this year), and Shawn Hill has more talent around him than he ever has.

I couldn't have said it any better myself. Even though he's been in the league for four years, I think Smith has been written off to early. Hell, he's only played a handful of games in the last two seasons, and has never enjoyed any amount of consistency on the offensive side of the ball. I really think he can be a decent QB in the right system.

Shaun Hill has only played in 12 games his entire seven-year career, and those all came in these last two years. In those 12 games, he has completed 235 of 367 passes (64%) for 2,547 yards, 18 touchdowns, nine interceptions, has a QB rating of 90.5, and a winning record (7-3) in the ten games that he's started (he's also the first San Francisco QB to have a winning record in games started since Jeff Garcia).

To compare, Hasselbeck has only finished a season with a higher completion percentage than Hill's career percentage once in his ten-year career, and a higher QB rating only twice in his career...he's also started in 103 games, about nine times as many as Hill.

Comparing the man to Hasselbeck is silly anyway considering how many games each player has started, but to just come right out and say that Hill isn't at least an average QB based upon the playing time he's been given is retarded. Even though I would like Smith to win the competition, I'd be equally as happy with Hill at the helm of the offense. He hasn't gotten a lot of chances behind center, but he's made the most of the ones he has gotten.

The morning crowd booed him. The afternoon crowd loved him. I'm talking, of course about Alex Smith, who came back from a middle-of-the-road morning practice with a couple of big plays in the afternoon, both of them to Brandon Jones. The first went about 35 yards, and Smith hit Jones with a nicely thrown pass along the right sideline over Allen Rossum. The second was even better because it came against the first-team secondary. The offense ran a flea flicker and Smith saw that Jones had a step on cornerback Nate Clements. Smith hit him in stride and Jones stepped into the end zone for a 50-yard touchdown.

Smith is like that MLB prospect that was highly touted, fell off, and then came back onto the scene as an older prospect, but still young playing time wise. Sorry, baseball is my best sport to talk about so i found that the only fitting analogy i can find. Hopefully Smith can handle the pressure and win the job over in san fran.
