Someone explain end of the Bucs-Saints game...

Receiver was shoved out of bounds, ran back in as quickly as possibly, and clearly fucking reestablished possession (six steps should do it). So why is it still illegal touching?

Because Freeman escaped from the pocket, the defender can shove the WR before the pass and there is no illegal contact. Once the WR is out of bounds, he can't touch the ball first, regardless if he reestablishes position.

Had Freeman thrown from the pocket, it would have been illegal contact by the Saints defender, so the catch would have been legal IF the TB WR reestablished himself (which he did). In that case, TB would have declined the penalty, TD.

Blame the rule, not the ref. Just another confusing, convoluted, overly complicated NFL rule.

Question, if the QB still has the ball in his hand once the WR re-establishes himself in bounds how is he the 1st person to touch it? That first person to touch the ball rules usually applies when the ball is in the air, or so I thought.

its incidental, the receiver gained no advantage doing what he did. Its a stupid rule all the way around.

unless the receiver purpose runs out to come back in at some angle to gain some unfair advantage there is nothing to call..its just dumb

The fact Freeman didn't throw the ball until after the receiver was back in bounds doesn't matter. That receiver still cannot be the first person after the pass is thrown to touch the ball.

Because when the QB leaves the pocket, while he has not crossed the line of scrimmage, there is a reasonable expectation that he may run with the football and in doing so, his WRs may block for him. As a defender, he has a right to pursue the ball carrier and can push someone out of his way. That is why the rule exists. However stupid, and ridiculous, it may be - it's still a rule and it is just as bad as the tuck rule, leaping, etc.
