[ALL] Someone explain the appeal of Achievements/Trophies/Gamerscore etc.

Because I don't get it or understand them. What's the point? I have no clue how high my gamerscore is or how many ps3 trophies I have. Whenever I unlock an achievement/trophy it's unintentional. I'm one step from turning off the notifications that pop up. I don't see why I should care or be worried about them at all.

Playing through a game multiple times to get achievements?

Doing tasks / making choices I wouldn't normally do to get trophies?

Visiting websites so I can see the full trophy/achievement list or strategies for completing them?

Going through a game to complete every achievement or get platinum?


Nah, none of that appeals to me.

There's a rare time I'll go for them (i.e. in Mass Effect 1 and 2) but that was mostly because I wanted to see every square inch of that game.

When I'm playing through a game like Mass Effect, if I replay anything it's simply because I like the game.

Like with Dragon Age I played through all 6 of the origin stories, not to unlock the achievements just because wanted to see all of them.

I used to like getting them, now there are too many games and too many achievements. I could care less now. When I get one I check what it is and that is about the extent. They were cool at first but they lost appeal.

Otherwise, I'm done with it. A game to me isn't complete because I got the achievements or didn't. If I love a game, I will keep playing it again even if I got all the achievements. Its done when I am tired with it.

I got into a situation like this recently.

Wanted to play through Uncharted 2 on the crushing difficulty my first playthrough. But you have to play it on hard first to unlock it and I had no intention of playing the game twice.

With Uncharted 1 it was easy enough to download a save with everything unlocked and play on crushing. With uncharted 2 this doesn't work. From what I've read and seen (error messages about trophies when loading other peoples' save.) trophies are part of the reason why.

There was this kid a few years ago who tried to scam kids by selling XBOX accounts and hacks and shit. He messaged me on Facebook asking if I wanted to by his account for $50. I told him I had an account, and he responded with "but this account has a 10,000 gamerscore."

and thats the problem with them now. they are now made to force people to keep playing over and over. Or even worse, making you do some ridiculous off the wall thing in order to unlock it

Yeah, generic replay value that has nothing to do with how good or bad the game is, but how the devs structure the achievements/trophies.

I saw the list of achievements for ncaa 12, one of them was to win a national championship in year one with BYU. No.

achievements for sports games are usually pretty lame but there are a few games that have really good ones that add a fun challenge.

If you're buying a game, you're pretty much coming in with the expectation of playing it again in the near future, if not somewhere down the road.

Multiple endings, collectibles, alternative ways to beat a level, unlockables, etc. compound on that mindset.

With trophies/achievements, you're now getting physical/numerical acknowledgement for your efforts.

The downside of that is, trophies/achievements are more important than the actual experience of sitting down and beating the game itself.

IMO, they add replay value and encourage you to put more time into a game versus beating it once and letting it collect dust/trading it in at grossly undervalued credit for another title you'll repeat the same process with.

Personally, I guess that I like them well enough. But I only really care when they either pop because you're exploring every inch of the game (like DA or ME) or when they truly are clever and/or funny (Half-Life 2 does some interesting things with that). In either case, the points aren't important to me for the most part, but they are a really nice guide to experiencing everything, and particularly stuff that is clever and wouldn't be thought of. And there are challenges that are interesting enough (like say, in Half-Life 2 Episode 1 on the Orange Box, there is an achievement for beating the episode while only firing a single bullet. It's hard as shit to do, but it's a challenge I never would have taken on in a game that I love, so I was willing to give it a shot. That game has a number of weird/crazy achievements that would only exist because of the achievement system -- another one is where you have to take a garden gnome throughout the entire game). I guess my point is, I don't care so much about the points, but I like when creativity is at the root of them, making you play games in different or more challenging ways.

It would be awesome, if you could use your gamerscore to unlock games in the marketplace. But of course microsoft wouldnt do that because they make a lot of money off of microsoft points

I go cool. when they pop up in the corner. like when i play fifa and I get something that says "wonder strike" or some shit. i don't go to any websites and find out what trophies a game has and try to win them. I think they implemented them to take advantage of people who have hoarding tendencies and try to accumulate everything. People do weird shit. Just look at the guys on OS trying to get NCAA 1 week early. They practically would suck your cock and pay you $100 to have the game. its all about the thrill baby.
