Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star writes that Joakim Soria "seems likely" to undergo Tommy John surgery.

Soria went to see Dr. Lewis Yocum on Tuesday in Los Angeles after an MRI on Monday showed damage in the ulnar collateral ligament of his throwing elbow. The second exam confirmed the ligament damage, so surgery appears inevitable. Still, he's currently taking a couple of days to consider his options. Jonathan Broxton should be considered the favorite to save games in his absence, but Greg Holland could also be in the mix.

Damn that's a big blow for the Royals, a team that looked to have a somewhat competitive chance in the AL Central (and still could).

He regressed a lot towards the end of last year but was still a viable closer.
 
Read about this a couple days ago. Vizcaino from the Braves is having to do the same. Sucks for both teams. Obviously more so with the Royals.

But seriously, I think KC's starting staff and overall youth was going to keep them out of contention this year anyway, but this clearly does not help.

This will still be a fun team to watch this year. Actually, Broxton fumbling his way through 9th innings adds Marmol like intrigue to the mix.
