3/4 of the upper deck was curtained off, plus 1/4 of the entire arena is always curtained off for the stage. Scattered empty seats everywhere,including what I would estimate as 20-25% of the $300 floor seats. Lower level ($75-$100) was probably 65-70% full, tough to tell, because you would have completely full sections, then rows & rows of empty seats. Plus, a lot of people never fucking sit down (more on this later).
The fighter are incredibly patinet towards goofs marking out and begging for pictures. John McCarthy must have taken, no exaggeration, 200 pictures. Same for Walker & Hendo. Why grown men line up to take pictures with other grown men is beyond my understanding, but whatever.
WITH THAT SAID, when Booker T showed up, I screamed like a school girl, fumbled for my cell phone, and got all giddy before I gathered myself and sat back down.
Crowd was made up like this:
-50% Affliction t-shirt wearing (always 2 sizes too small to show off the fact they only work out glamour muscles), Jersey Shore haircut douchebags w/whorish looking girlfriends. They never stay seated. Always walking around, parading their sluttly looking females, shaking hands, or marking out and running over to Hendo or Big John to take cheesy cell phone pics (always with the same arm-around-shoulder-one-fist-up pose).
-40% UFC fans who didn't recognize a single fighter on the card and constantly said things like "pffffft is this Cormier guy was any good, why isnt he with UFC? And look how out of shape he is!". I was cringing for rob all night.
-10% guys who had a clue.
The prelims were awful, all local bums, some with terrible records like 1-7 or 17-25, all 3X3 so we were one step up from amatuer hour. All of these local guys had pockets of fans though, so in many ways, the local bums are the best draws on the show. Good reactions for all of the prelims, too.
Nobody knew or cared about Galvao.
Cormier got a decent reaction, as the guys with a clue explained to their UFC friends why they should be impressed.
From my section, it looked like Lashley was getting hit in the back of the head at the end of the fight. People were shocked this wasnt the ruling, but a buddy assured me via text the blows were clean. How did it look on TV to you guys?
Gurgel got robbed. No point deduction on the late KO punch at the end of Rd.1? The he catches a knee to the head at he end, but it may have already been waved off. Still, he was still rocked from the illegal blow. Not even a point deduction?
Tim Kennedy was themost over all night, being from Texas and the whole army thing. People still chant "USA! USA!" like it's Hacksaw Jim Duggan circa 1988. So lame. Kennedy's army buddies were chanting "Ranger Up". When he lost, some drunked bafoon started shouting "RANGEEEEER DOWWWWN!", much to my amusement, but not so much so to Kennedy's army buddies. Could have gotten ugly, but the drunken bafoon's friends shut him up quickly. And Kennedy definately lost. If you think Kennedy won, give me the three rounds he won. C'mon.
I didnt realise any black people were even in the building until the King Mo fight, when they magically appeared and got all rowdy. Mo was super over, so being the heel northeast fan that I am, I rooted against him. I have never been super impressed with Mo, and no matter what rob sells you this was not even close to the two best 205'ers in the world fighting for the "World Champioship", but this was a fun fight with a lively crowd. Strikeforce has a WORLD CHAMPION who lost to MIKE KYLE. OK. Don't get me wrong, Strikeforce is major league MMA. So is Bellator, and Japan is like AAA. But If UFCis the Yankees, then Strikeforce is a .500 team and Bellator is the Pirates.
That's not ZOMBIE talk, that's just the truth, from an unbiased mega fan of everything.
sidenotes-Mr. & Mrs. Cyborg are very nice people...Big John will chat with anybody and never turns down pics...Gus Johnson shows up just in time for TV. Mauro & Frank watch all the prelims and bullshit with fans. Mauro hugged about 500 slutty looking ladies. That little dork definately got laid after the show, I assure you...JASON RILEY sat down right next to us half way through the Lashley fight, with one of his corner men, and watched the rest of the show. Mrs. W2BTD turns to me and says, "is that the guy who tapped to strikes?", loud as fuck, might as well have used a megaphone. Can't make this shit up. Yes, sweetie, you just called the 270lb pissed off man a pussy, thanks now STFU and go get a drink please, kthxbye.
