Super Bowl thoughts

*I think the most basic analysis of the game would be that Aaron Rodgers was more accurate than Ben Roethlisberger. Neither QB was really pressured all that much, and both teams were able to move the ball, but Rodgers was more accurate while Roethlisberger misfired on occasion. His INT to Collins was a big play, and he forced a pass that Bush intercepted.

*The turf was in terrible shape. I don't know why, maybe it was the recent cold weather, but players were slipping and getting hurt all game. Field goal kicking was a nightmare. On one play, Jordy Nelson fell to the turf and his sock got completely shredded. Were they playing on broken glass?

*I think the big play in the game was Clay Matthews' hit on Mendenhall that caused the fumble. The Steelers appeared primed to take the lead on that drive, but the Packers took the ball away and eventually scored themselves.

*Both Rodgers and Roethlisberger made some really aggressive throws. Rodgers TD pass to Jennings could have been picked off by a couple Steelers, and Roethlisberger's TD to Wallace was thrown despite a safety sitting on top of the play.

*As much as it pains me to say it, I think the Packers outcoached the Steelers. Their WR sets forced Polamalu into coverage, which didn't allow Polamalu the freedom to roam around and wreak havoc. Also, the Packers would split Starks or Jackson wide to James Harrison's side, which forced Harrison into coverage. I thought the Steelers should have blitzed Harrison on every down and moved him around so that the Packers couldn't isolate him in coverage. Very weird that the Steelers didn't adjust.

*Troy Aikman defending the phantom facemask call on Eric Crabtree by saying Crabtree grabbed the Steeler player "in the facemask area" was pathetic.

*I was glad the Steelers came back and made a game of it, but after Crosby kicked the last FG, the camera showed Roethlisberger on the sideline with Charlie Batch and the coaches, and no one displayed any confidence. They all looked like they wanted to be anywhere else but Dallas. The subsequent two-minute drill left much to be desired. The penalty on the kickoff hurt, but it took Pittsburgh an entire minute just to get to the 25-yard line. Not good.

I was running out to pick up wings and the guys on the radio actually said "will we see him back in the game, Im sure we will he played with a broke foot and nose, he aint coming out" This was sometime around the end of the first I think.

My wife is a Steelers fan and was all a mess when they were down 18. I told her to relax they were down 21 and came back.

Some things I picked up.

The game was good not great, it never really had the sitting on the edge of the couch feeling. Even on the 2 minute drive. I think the JETS/Steelers game ending was more exciting.

Aikmen blows, I hate listening to him. In the area of a facemask, what a dick.

Anther great comment they made "neither team wants to fall too far behind with these great defenses" - who really wants to fall behind period in any game yet along the super bowl. Wasnt it the great Steelers D that let a much weaker offense in the JETS back in it from a huge lead?

Fergie is still hot.

I didn't think either candidate (or defense for that matter) looked great in this game. Matthews did get the big play though, although I'm amazed at the lack of fumbles that Mendenhall had all year with the way he carries the ball.

I can see where you're coming from, but I'll take a guy with 3 tackles and a game-changing forced fumble to cause a turnover in the weakest time in the game for our defense every time. We were struggling on the defensive end and Matthews did what he's done all year, and he came up big when our defense really needed it.

Not trying to discredit him at all. I felt the same way when Troy forced that fumble against the Ravens in the regular season and that was a similar situation where I was saying to myself "how does that not happen more often?" with the way Flacco plays.

I was more just thinking out loud because on more than one occasion last night I said "how has Mendenhall not fumbled more?" So the forced fumble, while gut wrenching, wasn't unexpected.

Also, I just think that of all the things to tout in this game, the play of Clay Matthews and the statement of him being the true defensive player of the year isn't one of them. No offense.

the pregame stuff is really worthless to me now. i turned it off because NFL networks 20 hours of pregame coverage was to much for me. Fox pregame crew is a joke no matter what, but the excelled in being shitty for this pregame.

the mention of the black eyed peas halftime show was also ridiculous during the pregame. If that wasnt bad enough it was also forced down our throat during the game like a radio host telling u the time and temp every 5 mins. LAME

the half hour before the kickoff is always this awkward display of player intros, coin toss and other BS. this year it seemed unusually awkward with the HOF guys and the coin flip. Not to mention the horrible national anthem by chubby and whoever that chick was that sang america the beautiful. I for one am sick of all the cheap support our soldier crap during the game. Not because i dont support our troops, but because its like a cheap way for the NFL and networks to drum up positive support for their own agendas

the commercials were ok. nothing really stands as good. i do recall a few only because its a topic on the radio. I watched them all but culd have done without them.

the halftime show was down right terrible. the sound was awful, the whole concept of the show was terrible and even the attempt to cater to hard rock fan and hip hop fans with slash and usher was terrible. i couldnt even hear slashes guitar or ushers voice. As far as the music itself, i am not a fan of the black eyed peas, but that is irrelevant because i know its about mass appeal. but they sounded like shit. I was just hoping for the right angle to get a peek under fergies skirt...which i got a glimpse.

the post game presentation was also terrible. thats nothing new but this year they add to the crappiness by have staubach bring the trophy down the aisle thru a crowd of players and then he is up on the platform. the whole thing just looked uncomfortable. I dont know how bradshaw keeps his job. I guess his hillbilly schtick still appeals to the red necks in the south. Personally he annoys the fuck out of me. The post game interviews by fox were full of dumb questions to the winners. And the loser interviews, which i always look forward to were all about being proper to the person they were talking too. Its like the interviewers dont want to upset the nfl or create any controversy by asking real questions.

as for the game itself. it was ok. I was rooting for the packers, but its more about rooting against the steelers. it wasnt all that exciting even when it got close. there were alot of things about the game that were sloppy and it seemed like the steelers were not interested in being there (like senser mentioned). The packers won, but it seemed like they won against a team that gave 80%. I had higher hopes for this game and feel like it was a let down.

i know he tweaked his knee early pretty badly and for whatever reason he was not wearing the gloves he usually does, but you will not hear any excuses. the packers straight up out played and out coached us.

the play calling (a play action pump fake bomb from inside your 10 only down 7 for one) on offense for pittsburgh was horrid. we either need to run the ball or get into a muddel huddle/hurry up if we want to pass.

Aikman and Buck were typically awful. I thought the FOX broadcast failed to live up to the big game atmosphere. Felt like any other game, presentation wise.

Okay? I guess I don't get the point. He had a better postseason than Polamalu, but I guess I'm confused as to why that's what you choose to focus on. If anything, the play of Rodgers is the story. It seems odd that you want to tout rather mediocre play as some example of why Matthews was the best defensive player of the season.

I wasn't disagreeing with the award. I back Troy getting in the DPOY thread. I was just stating my appreciation of Matthews bringing those game-changing plays into the postseason as well. I'm not arguing against Troy getting the award, he deserved it.

LOL! I remember that and totally agree. The main memory that I have/still joke about is Buck's call of the FUCKING BOSTON RED SOX winning their first WS in 1,000 years or whatever it was. Reminded me of when Harry Doyle passed out due to drunkenness in Major League 2 and Monty took over for him. A screamer is hit and this guy makes a spectacular diving play. Monty's analysis? "Fly ball...*pause*...caught."
