Before the combine I put together a mock draft on my site GridironGuru.net, a football blog that took off for about a week until school slowly buttfucked me and my roommate into obscurity, but because of the inconsistencies I've decided to release the Post-Combine Mock to you here at VSN. Earlier today I put this all together with much longer explanations, but alas, my laptop died and I lost it. Each pick is not where I'd like the player to go, but rather where I think he'll go. Enjoy...
1. Carolina – Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri
He is a shitty college quarterback, but they tell me he might just have elite potential? Would I do this? No. Will Carolina? Yes. Gabbert will wine n' dine with the best of them.
2. Denver – Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
Peterson is the safest pick in terms of getting an impact player in the draft, at CB or FS. Pat Bowlen might be scared to draft early pass rusher after Jarvis Moss, Robert Ayers, and Tim Crowder in recent years.
3. Buffalo – Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M
Miller is a great prospect who could learn a lot from Merriman. Bills need help with their pass rush, and have faith in last years 3rd rounder, Alex Carrington, to take over at a DE spot.
4. Cincinnati – AJ Green, WR, Georgia
The Bengals need a QB, but Gabbert is gone and Cammy Cam won't interview well enough to merit the 4th overall pick. The Bengals can grab Mallet or Ponder in the 2nd round and he has AJ Green and Jermaine Gresham to throw to.
5. Arizona – Robert Quinn, OLB, UNC
A panic pick, the Cardinals wanted Miller or Gabbert. Quinn offers them the next best thing in an explosive OLB to replace Joey Porter. Newton slides further thanks to immaturity.
6. Cleveland – Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
I had this pick in my last mock too. His combine performance made it more likely. Holmgren told McCoy he had the potential to be Steve Young, so it's time to give him his Jerry Rice.
7. San Francisco – Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska
This guy is my personal favorite prospect, :fap: but bias aside he is a damned good prospect. I've been talking him up since the end of the season and his combine performance vindicated my chatter.
8. Tennessee – Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn
Tennessee has been a team known for defense since it's existence (good or bad defense). The D hasn't been the same since it lost Haynesworth, and so it's time to get their next great DT.
9. Dallas – Da’Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson
Bowers falls because of his knee surgery. Jerry Jones is extatic. He can put on a few lbs and be a good 3-4 DE to give them some pass rush from that position. Marcus Spears had 8 sacks in six seasons.
10. Washington – Marcell Dareus, DE, Alabama
Dareus falls because of circumstances, not lack of talent, and he makes Washington the second team in the draft to replace Albert Haynesworth. It'd be tempting to take CammyCam, but Shanahan knows better.
Dareus gives Washington the Haynesworth they never had
11. Houston – Aldon Smith, OLB, Missouri
As the Texans switch to a 3-4 defense they say Mario Williams stays at end. Wade Phillips had Shawn Merriman in San Diego, DeMarcus Ware in Dallas, and now Aldon Smith in Houston as the next great pass rushing linebacker.
12. Minnesota – Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
If Cam Newton will succeed anywhere right away it'll be in Minnesota. If they can grab a veteran QB also, more power to them, but Newton adds a special wrinkle to an offensive attack that has already proven can be lethal.
13. Detroit – Tyron Smith, OT, USC
Finally, the first offensive lineman comes off the board. With the potential that the Lions had shown, imagine if they could keep Stafford healthy and protected?
14. St. Louis – JJ Watt, DT, Wisconsin
The Rams would love for Julio to fall to them, but it isn't going to happen. This is the most likely trade spot for anyone in the first round who wants a premier end, but Watt adds a DE/DT hybrid of pressure to Spagz' attack. Jimmy Smith could be a surprise pick.
15. Miami – Mark Ingram, HB, Alabama
I'll stay with this pick despite Ingram's lackluster combine. Some people say Jake Locker should go here, but I ask why draft Locker when you already have his a young inaccurate QB on your roster?
16. Jacksonville – Jake Locker, QB, Washington
David Garrard had a good season, but he is not an exciting player. It's time for the Jaguars to start grooming his replacement. Kerrigan would be a good pick too, but it's hard to pass up a potential all-pro quarterback.
17. New England – Ryan Kerrigan, OLB, Purdue
This is the perfect pick in my mind. They need another dedicated defender to help establish the pass rush for a young defense. Who better to teach Kerrigan the ways of the 3-4 OLB than ol' Belichick anyway?
18. San Diego – Cameron Jordan, DE, Cal
End is a definite need, and while the Chargers had the best defense in the league they could still generate a better pass rush from the line. Larry English looks like a bust, but we don't know if Justin Houston can be an OLB in the NFL.
19. New York Giants – Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College
Both of the Giants starting offensive tackles are over 30 years old. On a team that lacks a lot of needs, it seems fit to groom Eli's protectors. There are no interior lineman worthy of this pick or they'd jump all over it.
20. Tampa Bay – Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA
The Buccaneers get fucked. None of the top ends are left on the board. Mark Dominik will pass on an end if a suitable fit isn't there. The Bucs could also use a linebacker who operates behind the line of scrimmage. Enter Akeem Ayers.
Akeem Ayer's 4.8 doesn't mean a thing
21. Kansas City – Nate Solder, OT, Colorado
The Chiefs are almost tempted to take a Jonathan Baldwin or Leonard Hankerson, but they'd rather keep Cassel off the ground. Barry Richardson meets the bench once again.
22. Indianapolis – Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
The Colts franchise tagged QB gets a tackle to protected him all the way to retirement. Carimi claims teams tell him he's the best tackle in the draft, and now he has the opportunity to prove it.
23. Philadelphia – Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado
Character concerns are the question, but the Eagles can afford to take the risk as Asante Samuel is still around. Smith could team up with Nate Allen to be a force in the secondary for years to come.
24. New Orleans – Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois
The Saints have a few needs on the defensive line, but Liuget looks to be the best pick to improve the team right away. They could also take Adrian Clayborn or one of several other DTs.
25. Seattle – Aaron Williams, CB, Texas
The Seahawks learned last time they drafted a Miami CB in Kelly Jennings they might need to look at another school to get their guy. Williams was a teammate of Earl Thomas at Texas and that should be enough to seal this one.
26. Baltimore – Mike Pouncey, OG, Florida – Baltimore gets an interior lineman that's just another piece of their offensive puzzle. Baltimore passes on Brandon Harris too because there should be value in the 2nd at CB.
27. Atlanta – Justin Houston, DE, Georgia
The Georgia boy stays in his state as he helps replace the mistake that was Jamaal Anderson. Eventually he'll replace John Abraham as the stud RE in Atlanta's scheme, but for now he'll rotate in on the left to cause havoc.
28. New England – Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State
The Patriots could use this pick on defense again, but there might not be another starter at tackle in this draft after Sherrod. I say the Patriots either take Sherrod here or trade the pick.
29. Chicago – Leonard Hankerson, WR, Miami
The Bears have to address receiver somewhere in the early rounds. Knox might be the answer at one receiver spot, but Hester is not a starting caliber NFL receiver. Hankerson will be a reliable and consistent target.
30. New York Jets – Muhammad Wilkerson, DT, Temple
Adding more weapons to the arsenal. They could use this pick on a safety but it doesn't seem like there is a worthy pick at this point. Wilkerson will be a great defensive end in the Jets scheme.
31. Pittsburgh – Johnny Patrick, CB, Louisville
Whaaat? Johnny Patrick over Brandon Harris and a a slew of other CBs? Watch the film. He is a great corner and would definitely fit the profile of a Steeler CB, except this one can make plays.
32. Green Bay - Christian Ballard, DE, Iowa
What do you give the team that has it all? With Driver on his last limb and James Jones leaving they could use a receiver. They could also use a consistent OLB opposite Matthews, but they take a playmaking DE to give them a healthy rotation.
WHY DID THIS PLAYER FALL OUT OF THE FIRST????
