Brett Favre has officially filed retirement papers with the NFL, sources tell FOXSports' Alex Marvez.
Favre also filed retirement papers in February of 2009, but this time feels final. After dealing with major injuries, declining play and off-field drama this season, it would be shocking to see the retirement process be reversed. It's also unlikely that the 41-year-old could have many suitors on the open market even if he wanted to keep playing. With his papers filed, Favre will be eligible for the Hall of Fame in five years.

Great career, 3 time MVP, and a player who you could tell truly loved the game of football. He was amazing to watch as a Packer when I was younger because he looked like a little kid out there just having a hell of a lot of fun. He was an iron man, an amazing player, and a better teammate.

Favre went from a symbol of toughness and a highly regarded figure, to a guy who hung around too long, threw one of the worst INT's in the history of football vs. the Saints, fake retired three times (shaking the Vikings down for millions in the process the third time), showed his tiny cock to the world and exposed himself as a perverted creeper, and became a running joke for all of the above.

If you think Favre is regarded the same way today as he was when he "retired" with a face full of tears from Green Bay, then I don;t know what to tell you. He's gone from legendary figure to late night punch line. His legacy may not be completely destroyed, but it;s certainly tarnished.

EDIT- His silly streak ended during his comebacks, too. Nothing happened during the last three years that added to or enhanced his legacy, but almost everything that happened was negative. I'm actually baffled that anyone would think his returns havent hurt him in this regard.

Agreed. Very few of the great ones leave their sports on top of the world. People forget about Montana with the Chiefs, Jordan with the Wizards, Babe Ruth with the Braves, Jerry Rice with the Seahawks or Vince Lombardi with the Redskins. Favre will be remembered as a Green Bay Packer and one of the best QB's of all-time by the time he is enshrined in Canton.

Favre has always been known as the guy who would throw a crucial interception in a big moment. His interception against the Saints only solidfied that image, but people have always given him a pass because he's the "gunslinger". Obviously his retirements have become a running joke, but most people put that on the fact that GB pushed him out prematurely and that he "loved to play the game". Even this year people have been saying that he returned for his teammates. Favre unlike most legendary players is easy to relate to for the common mainstream fan and that works in his favor.

I can name countless negative moments/images from the same period that have hurt his image/legacy.

Favre's last three years go well beyond the scope of a HOF player sticking too long in a unfamiliar uniform. The last three years were a disaster in terms of public image.

I don't need to name one, because the negative moments won't damage his legacy as a football player. Three years ago Favre was a first ballot HOFer and he's a first ballot HOFer now....do you disagree? His retirements are seen as a running joke, but not to the point where they've damaged his legacy. Favre's career will be remembered because of the cliches that the media and fan love.....he will be known as a guy who "loved the game," "played with a passion," "left it all on the field," "played until his body wouldn't let him," "played the right way," etc.

For the caliber of superstar he is you'd think the Sterger case would have been even bigger, but people don't care. He had the image of a loving husband and people don't even care about him exposing himself to another woman. In 5 years the Sterger case won't matter.
