Paul Thomas Anderson, the guy who made There Will Be Blood and Boogie Nights among others, is back with a critique faith and evangelical practices called "The Master" with heavy hitters Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix. Below is a plot description and a teaser, which hardly seem to correlate..

Scheduled to hit theaters on October 12, the film is set in America in the years following World War II. A charismatic intellectual (Philip Seymour Hoffman) launches a faith-based organization and taps a young drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) as his right-hand man. But as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the onetime vagabond finds himself questioning the belief system he has embraced, and his mentor.

Do you think that he's just being coy? When I watched the trailers prior to seeing this thread, that was the first thing that jumped into my head.

“The Master” is a dangerous movie. I can’t remember a time in recent memory when I worried about what characters might do when they entered a scene. But when Joaquin Phoenix comes into a frame or scene at any time in “The Master,” you’re really concerned he’s going to hit or kill somebody, or do something utterly wild and unpredictable.

There’s so much going on in “The Master,” you almost need two hours and 17 minutes to dissect it. It’s a gritty, edgy, uncomfortable film marked by Freddie’s [Phoenix] deviancy and Dodd’s [Hoffman] avuncular unease. Phoenix and Hoffman are completely riveting, never once hit a false note, and keep the action moving. Amy Adams peels back a new side of her very interesting, onion like sensibility. She seems to always have new tricks to show us. Knowing that Hoffman and Phoenix are show stoppers, Amy works along the edges until she sees her moment. She’s absolutely terrific.

Some early viewers said on the internet they were confused, or that the movie was dreamy. Others compared it to Terrence Malick. I disagree on both counts. The story was easy enough to follow. And it was ethereal when it was supposed to be, explicit at other times. It’s not an easy movie, it’s not “The Artist” or “The King’s Speech” in that it’s happily embraceable. “The Master” is very sophisticated, mature filmmaking. I’m glad they’re releasing it on Septmber 14th. It’s going to take at least two months for every one to digest it and discuss it before the cacaphony of awards season starts.

Well damn, I can't wait to see this.

Hoffman, Phoenix and Adams will all get nominated for everything. Phoenix definitely deserves some wins. PT Anderson as well; he shot this movie beautifully and it's actually really fucking funny.

I'm holding off on seeing this until I go to D.C. next month so I can see it in 70 mm. Bummed with having to wait the long but I'm sure it'll be worth it.

Probably because she's a child and shouldn't be watching movies about a gas huffing pussy lover. Did you even see the movie? It doesn't bash Scientology. Tom Cruise saw the movie and enjoyed it, actually.

A few moments in the film flew way over my head. It needs another viewing that will hopefully clear them up. Whatever I think of the film though, Phoenix was in full beast mode here. His facial mannerisms alone would get him a nomination.

 

One of the things that got lost for me was after the film, I was talking to my buddy and he thought the whole sequence at the end when Phoenix was in the theater sleeping was real. To me it was a dream. Can't really find a definite answer on whether it was or not.
