Probably one of the best MMA/Striking in the HW division fights ever

There have been some great HW striking match ups before, former K1 greats in MMA matching up, etc...but this is about as solid as you can get for a 'K-1 fighter' vs a 'MMA striker', Cro Cop vs Fedor was a great match up, but Fedor had/used a more complete gameplan and was a grappler at heart

The REEM is the current K-1 WGP champ, current lineal MMA HW Champ, JDS is the UFC HW Champ and has out struck pretty much everyone he has faced, a pure 'MMA striker'

With that being said, I wonder how much the other factors will come to play, everyone expecting a stand up war, but JDS will take down guys, he likes to mix them in

The Reem has used many clinch TDs and worked from the top against good strikers, he isnt just a 'stand and bang' guy, plus the REEMotine is deadly

I wil say this, always have, Brocks TDs were highly overrated in MMA, Mir and Herring have zero TD defense, so those were easy ones for Brock

Randy with a 50 lbs weight disadvatage only was taken down once by Brock and was able to get up, plus Randy put Brock into the cage a couple times

He couldnt sniff a TD on Carwin in the first, once in the 2nd and Carwins body locked up he got it, Cain popped right back up also, easliy the better wrestler

JDS doesnt have the wrestling background of Brock, but he mixes them in GSP like, after good strikes, feints, etc...he just doesnt do it much, but when he does them the guy usually goes down, the best TD artists mix them in with quality stikes and feints that work, Brock didnt have that

A quick striking breakdown

JDS: More of a 'boxer', loves his hands, will work in some knees a kick here and there, but now he is all about boxing, he was more of a wild striker when he first came up, but has become tighter over the last couple fights, works off the jab nicely, moves well and has one of the best uppercuts around, he can control the range really well which is huge in striking

Edge in striking against Overeem would be faster hands and better movement

The Reem: A stalker, looks to pick his shots, will wade through some strikes to land a power shot, not a big time jab, favors hooks and overhands, his knees are the best in the sport, probably the best strike in MMA right now combined with clinch game, can also kick which will keep you honest, he is a dutch striker through and through, power shot after power shot

Edge is sriking over JDS would be, mixes it up better, clinch game is just nasty and keeps his defenses up when throwing power shots

Some varibles, I here a lot about JDS 'boxing' being much crisper than Overeem, not sure about that though, boxing isnt just throwing punches, on the defensive side JDS still has holes when he punches, on his big left hook his right hand drops, same punch that Hari threw against The Reem when he got KO'd, Overeems left hook was tighter and had his right hand on his chin for protection, these little things make a win a loss somethimes, JDS starts throwing hard and the hands drop, look for Reem to counter after using the high gaurd to defend the shots

JDS needs to stay on the outside, work that jab over and over, frustrate Alistar, pick his big shots and back off, don't let the clinch come into play, if JDS goes in he needs to go for the TD, not play in the clinch range, outside or a TD, dont get caught in the middle

This is a great fight for Dana to hype, one guy, his 'champ' he said doesnt have good cardio and the other guy he laughed at when fans started saying he is the best HW after Fedor lost, go earn your money slappy

For me, it comes down to how Cigano responds to Overeem's pressure. 'Reem is a frontrunner that has buckled against fighters he couldn't intimidate or bully. If Cigano can stand his ground and not be afraid to get in close with Overeem, I think he definitely take it. Cigano probably has the fastest hands at HW (him or Cormier) and could definitely KO Overeem.

With that said, it takes a lot of balls to willingly exchange with UBERREEM.

Minutes after Alistair Overeem ended the career of Brock Lesnar in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, heavyweight titleholder Junior Dos Santos grinned with excitement about his next challenger.

"It's going to be really, really good for the fans," Dos Santos told USA TODAY. "Because he's a striker (and) I'm a striker, it's going to be a stand-up battle."

The striking match-up between Dos Santos and Overeem appears more competitive on paper. Both men view themselves as knockout artists, through with different specialties.

Coming from the Dutch tradition of kickboxing, Overeem wields a broader arsenal that blends kicks, knee strikes, elbows and punches. He has won several fights by using his legs for knockouts, including Friday's result -- he landed several knees on Lesnar before crumpling him with a left kick to the liver.

"He's pretty good at using his kicks, his knees, his punches," Dos Santos said. "But I believe so much in my boxing."

'K-1 isnt MMA!' yeah, this is true, but when Overeem won the WGP they basically handicapped him with the clinch rules which is a huge part of his game, in MMA he can use all his tools, not the silly 1 knee off a clinch and not using 2 hands rule

Cardio? Who cares about cardio with these two....it will be another fight than ends after 2 rounds max.

cardio has its place in this fight, JDS will probably move a lot, he has faded in the 2nd and 3rd, The REEM has had cardio issues, most recently with Werdum, but could have been injury related

When Overeem doesnt have to grapple much, he paces himself and can last longer like in his K1 fights, he will stalk, not look to waste energy, JDS will have to make him chase and pot shot him coming in, plus fight off the clinch attempts

The Part on The Reem

Many of you will also be familiar with Alistair Overeem's overhand or Cross Counter. In his match with Ben Edwards, Alistair showed enormous improvement in his boxing game from his previous performances, where his over-reliance on knee strikes led to the K-1 organization (unfairly in this fan's opinion) banning the Thai clinch. Notice at 1:30 and 20 seconds later at 1:50 how Overeem uses his head movement coincided with a huge right hook to catch Edwards while he's jabbing. The beauty of the Cross Counter is that it can be landed after the jab has landed if the opponent is slow to draw it back, as at 1:30, or as the jab comes out, as at 1:50.


Many call the overhand a sloppy punch; but I implore those among you who look on it like that as an offensive weapon to consider it's context. When thrown as a lead or as part of a combination, the overhand is pretty telegraphed and amateurish, but when a lead is drawn out of the opponent and the Cross Counter employed, the overhand suddenly becomes the most dangerous weapon in a striker's arsenal.
