This looks a lot like a remake rather than a prequel. It does look very promising, but I doubt it touches Carpenter's version.

Yea they call it a prequel but it looks like a remake. The problem with that so the original is nearly perfect the way it is, there is practically no need for this. Maybe they can surprise us and pull a Let Me In, but the trailer doesn't seem to show it. I think I might be more intrested if they came out and called it a remake rather than trying to say its a prequel that looks like the exact same thing as the original.

John Carpenter's version was considered a remake, but the original was more of straight monster flick, Carpenter was the one who added the element of being able to mimic animals, which added the paranoia suspense element to the film.

anyone who wants to pay 10 bucks to see this in the theater needs to drop that money into buying John Carpenter's the Thing on Blu Ray $9.99 at Amazon right now

Yea I watched the original a few days ago on netflix, the alien morphs were insane I didn't realize the work they put into it well done for the 80's.

It also made me rent the thing video game from GF.

The problems I can see with this "prequel" are:

-Not sticking to the timeline (the original was set in the 80s and I can envision laptops and iPods strewn about the place) and...

-CG replacing the old SFX (I get that there are safer measures used now for stunts and physical effects but nothing replaces karo syrup, latex foam and detail work) to the point of it looking too fake.

I've watched a playthrough. The trust system was inventive, but ultimately flawed....

 

...and a waste of time since everyone you met would ultimately turn into a monster whether they passed the blood test or not.
