The World Series Replay Project

RyanLeaf16

#DoSomething
I have been working on what I call "The World Series Replay Project" for about a week now. I downloaded a ton of historic rosters from the MLB 12 The Show roster vault from a creator by the name of "russilini." He has several historic rosters out and I decided to download several of them and replay that World Series from those years. Further, I am using box score info and using the exact starting lineups/pitching matchups for that game. I am taking control of the home team for each game and I am playing out the games within the same set of rules when permissible. For example, I can not turn off the DH for an exhibition game in a AL park. If anyone knows how to do this, let me know and I will play without a DH until it was adopted for World Series play in 1976 using an every-other year format. Until then, I will have to use a DH in games that are played in AL parks. Also, all games will be played during the day as night games, in the World Series, didn't happen till about 1974 or 1975.

The first World Series replay that I am conducting is the 1962 World Series between the New York Yankees and the San Francisco Giants. Feel free to check out the 1962 season page here: http://seamheads.com/baseballgauge/year.php?yearID=1962
Shameless plug, but, the owner of this site happens to be owned by one of my best friends and it has a ton of great material. This is his second baseball site. His first site was sold to the Tampa Bay Rays. These things are a labor of love for him, but, I wanted to give out info on what I am using to produce these replays.

Anyway the first game of the series will have no stats, just a highlight video because I was in a rush and was not able to take more diligent notes. Hope you guys find this somewhat entertaining. I will be doing this probably throughout the year as I have a number of different historic rosters and I will also be playing a lot of MLB 13 The Show.

1962 World Series, Game 3 Preview

1962 World Series, Game 3 Preview

Game 3 of the 1962 World Series was the first of three at Yankee Stadium. IRL, the series was tied 1-1 (as it is in this replay). Game 3 starters included Bill Stafford toeing the rubber for the Yankees. Stafford was 14-9 during the 1962 season and pitched 200+ innings for the only time in his career. '62 was also his last as a full-time starter.

Taking the mound for the NL champion Giants was 35-year old Billy Pierce. Pierce, IRL, was 16-6 during the season and was at the end of his career. Pierce finished 3rd in NL Cy Young voting that year. 1962 was also Pierce's last as a starter. After that, he became a bullpen arm.

The starting lineups for this game will be a tad bit different as the DH was not used IRL, but, the game does not allow me to turn off the DH in a AL park...or at least I don't know how to do that lol.

Of note is that I will always be using the home team, so for the next three games - I will be running with the Yankees...just in time for the Giants to have back-to-back-to-back HOFers in the lineup (Mays, McCovey & Cepeda).

Yankees, Game 3 lineup:

1 - Tony Kubek, ss
2 - Bill Richardson, 2b
3 - Tom Tresh, lf
4 - Mickey Mantle, cf
5 - Roger Maris, rf
6 - Elston Howard, c
7 - Bill Skowron, 1b
8 - Clete Boyer, 3b
9 - Bill Stafford, p

Giants, Game 3 lineup:

1 - Felipe Alou, lf
2 - Chuck Hiller, 2b
3 - Willie Mays, cf
4 - Willie McCovey, rf
5 - Orlando Cepeda, 1b
6 - Ed Bailey, c
7 - Jim Davenport, 3b
8 - Jose Pagan, ss
9 - Billy Pierce, p

I will be playing game 3 tomorrow morning and will post results as soon as the game is completed and I can get everything updated.

5 - Orlando Cepeda, 1b
6 - Ed Bailey, c
7 - Jim Davenport, 3b
8 - Jose Pagan, ss
9 - Ernie Bowman, dh ***I used the lowest-rated hitter as each team's DH to simulate the pitchers at the plate***

New York Lineup:

1 - Tony Kubek, ss
2 - Bobby Richardson, 2B
3 - Tom Tresh, lf
4 - Mickey Mantle, cf
5 - Roger Maris, rf
6 - Elston Howard, c
7 - Bill Skowron, 1B
8 - Clete Boyer, 3B
9 - Yogi Berra, dh

Game Notes:

Billy Pierce came out pitching like the Cy Young Award winner, not the guy who came in third in the voting. Pierce was running over the Yankee lineup with 9 K's through his first 5 innings of work. The Yankees didn't record a base-runner until the 4th inning. Across the diamond, the Giants were not faring as well against Bill Stafford either. The Giants' Orlando Cepeda and Willie Mays had solo homeruns in the 2nd and 4th innings respectively...other than that though, the Giants offense was held off the basepaths as well.

It wasn't until the Yankees half of the 7th inning that the Bronx Bombers found a way to put up some runs. Back-to-back doubles by Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris put the Yankees within striking distance. An Elston Howard single brought Maris around on what was a bang-bang play at home. Maris was called "safe" as he slid under the tag.

After the 7th inning, the Giants only had five baserunners for the rest of the game. However, three of them did get into scoring position - and the Giants were not able to bring anyone around. In the bottom of the 11th inning, Yankees left fielder Tom Tresh drove a pitch to DEEP center, but, Willie Mays was able to snag the ball just before going over the wall in a excellent display of range and defense. Mickey Mantle was next to the plate, he was able to take a pitch, middle-in, and drive it out over the right field fence for a walk-off homerun. Yankees win 3-2 and take a 2-1 series lead. Game 4 is pivotal in that the Giants will have Juan Marichal take the mound for the first time in this series and the Yankees will send Whitey Ford to the mound.

This is sweet, I'll be following.

I am having a blast doing this too. More fun than franchise or RTTS IMVHO. After this series, I will be going back in time just a few years and replaying the 1960 World Series between the Pirates and the Yankees.

1962 World Series Game 4 Preview

1962 World Series Game 4 Preview

Game 4 was a pivotal one during the 1962 World Series. It was the first game that Juan Marichal was able to take the mound for the Giants and the second time that Whitey Ford would take the mound for the Yankees after having won game 1 of the series. In this replay, much like IRL, the Yankees head in with a 2-1 lead in the series, and a chance to take a commanding 3-1 lead with the prospect of a potential series-clinching game 5 at home.

IRL, the Giants were able to even the series with a big four run 7th inning to break up a tie ball game. Being, that I am controlling the home-team for each game, I will be looking to break away from history's path and have the Yankees take that commanding 3-1 series lead. So far though, each game has played out as it did IRL. While the scores did not reflect what happened, the end results have followed the same path thus far.

Whitey Ford was 17-8 in 1962 with 250+ innings pitched. Juan Marichal was 18-11 with 260+ innings pitched. Ford won the Cy Young in 1961 as that season was his masterpiece, but, 1962 saw a dip in overall production, but, still a fine record and the definitive ace of that Yankee staff. Marichal was still only in his third season and was in the midst of a rather up-and-down career thus far. It would not be till 1963 that Marichal took off and became a complete and dominant pitcher.

The original lineups for this game will obviously be a bit different due to the lack of ability to turn the DH option "off" during exhibition games. Due to this, I will again use the weakest hitter on each team's bench in the 9 spot to simulate the pitcher at the plate. What I am posting below is what the actual lineups were for that day though.

Starting Lineups:

San Francisco Giants:

1. Harvey Kuenn, RF
2. Chuck Hiller, 2B
3. Willie Mays, CF
4. Felipe Alou, LF
5. Orlando Cepeda, 1B
6. Jim Davenport, 3B
7. Tom Haller, C
8. Jose Pagan, SS
9. Juan Marichal, P

Game Notes:

It was an unusual game in how everything played out. Yankee starter Whitey Ford pitched to contact and gave up 11 hits through 6.0 innings of work. However, in pressure situations, Ford was rather aplomb and working out of almost every jam he found himself in.

The Yankees got on the board early with a 2-run Elston Howard homerun in the second inning. Bobby Richardson drove another ball out to left field in the third inning to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead. Ford continued to struggle with limiting baserunners, but, he continued to work out of jams and keep runs off the board.

It looked as if the Yankees would add some insurance runs in the sixth inning after a Mickey Mantle double, but, Mantle was LOB after a Roger Maris ground out and a Elston Howard strike-out. Up 3-1 in the eighth inning, the Yankee bullpen allowed two runs after Jim Davenport executed a textbook sac bunt down the first base line that moved Felipe Alou to third and Orlando Cepeda to second. A Tom Haller single would bring Alou and Cepeda around to tie the game.

The Yankees answered back in their half of the eighth after a Tony Kubek double and a Bobby Richardson sac bunt moved him to third. Tom Tresh put the Yankees up for good when he smacked the ball down the first base line to bring Kubek in for the score and the lead 4-3. Marshall Bridges entered the game in the ninth inning and sat the Giants down in order, with the final out a called third-strike against Willie Mays.

The Yankees now lead the series 3-1 and can clinch at home with Ralph Terry taking the mound against the Giants Jack Sanford.

1962 World Series, Game 5 Preview

Game 5 in this World Series replay is a possible series-clinching game for the New York Yankees. However, in the real world, the series was tied 2-2 and was delayed a day due to rain. The pitching matchup in this game saw Ralph Terry take the mound for the Yankees against Jack Sanford for the Giants. Terry was an absolute horse for the Yankees in '62 as he pitched 298.2 innings and won 23 games that season. IRL, Terry was a hard-luck loser in game 2. In this replay, Terry was run off the mound in game 2 out in San Francisco after allowing four runs in just four innings.

Jack Sanford won game 2 of the '62 World Series, IRL, with a complete game shutout of the Yankees. In this replay, Sanford also won game 2 with a strong 7.0 inning performance allowing only one run. Sanford was 24-7 in '62 and was the Cy Young runner-up. Sanford went 265.1 innings in '62 for the Giants. While game 5 was not a potential series-clincher IRL, it is in this replay - and the Cy Young runner-up will have to bring his best "stuff" to keep the Giants in it.

I played game 5 this morning. It was a complete 180 from the first four games. Total slugfest in all honesty. I will post results tonight

1959 :shifty:

Only problem with that is my grandfather was the third base coach on the Sox staff that year and I would be tempted to use Chicago throughout the series. Especially since the fans at the time made him the scapegoat for losing the series. He eventually got his ring though in 1968 with the Tigers.

Game Notes:

We'll see ya in San Francisco! The Yankees failed to clinch a World Series title in front of the hometown fans as they dropped a 11-7 decision to the Giants. The Yankees' Ralph Terry dropped another game in this World Series and has been somewhat of a disappointment. The Giants bats came alive early as they racked up six runs off of Terry in the first inning alone. The Yankees looked as if they may get right back into the game after a 2-run Mickey Mantle homerun - his third of the series. The Giants would add another run in the second inning as Willie Mays crossed the plate after a Felipe Alou double.

Down 7-2 in the fourth inning, the Yankees looked to come alive after back-to-back homeruns by Bobby Richardson and Tom Tresh. Mickey Mantle kept the rally alive with a single of his own, but, the rally was shut down after Roger Maris grounded into a double play to end the inning. Still, down 7-4 after a terrible start, the Yankees looked to be back in the game.

However, the Yankees pitchers could not shut down the Giants heavy-hitters, including Willie McCovey who went 4-5 with 3 RBI on the day. The Yankees will now have to fly cross-country to San Francisco to try and win another world title. Starters for game 6 will be the "Chairman of the Board" Whitey Ford, for the Yankees and Billy Pierce for the Giants.

Holy shit, never knew that. That's a great little nugget. Tony Cuccinello!

Obviously, I've never seen it but I know the play being talked about. That team got there by getting extra bases and extra runs through aggressiveness. It wasn't a good hitting team so looking back, I don't blame him for doing it at all. No one play ever really causes you to lose a World Series.

Yeah, it was actually pretty silly, but, fans are passionate and they needed a target. Had he scored and they won the series, I doubt anyone would praise it as a turning point.

7 - Ed Bailey, 2
8 - Jose Pagan, 6
9 - Billy Pierce, 1

Game Notes:

It ain't over yet! The San Francisco Giants survived game 6 of the World Series behind a brilliant pitching performance from Billy Pierce. Pierce, who was a hard-luck loser in game 1 against Whitey Ford, outdueled the Yankee ace in game 6. Pierce tossed 7.0 shutout innings against the Yankees in a 2-1 victory for San Francisco.

The Giants drew first blood in the second inning after catcher Ed Bailey sacrificed Jim Davenport over and pitcher Billy Pierce kept the inning alive with a single of his own before Harvey Kuenn slapped a single that brought Davenport home for an early 1-0 lead. The Yankees never really posed much of a thread to Pierce on the mound. The only time the Yankees were able to string along consecutive hits was in the seventh inning after singles by Roger Maris and Elston Howard. Pierce quickly shut the Yankees down by getting Bill Skowron to pop-out to shallow center field. The Giants added an insurance run in the seventh after Chuck Hiller hit a sac fly that brought Jose Pagan in for a 2-0 lead.

In the ninth inning, Dick Lemay did face some trouble, including a shot down right field by Elston Howard that went just foul to preserve the Giants lead. Lemay was able to get Howard to ground out to second base on the next pitch to tie the series at 3-3 and force a game 7.

You may recognize the pitching matchup for game 7...It was the same matchup for game 5: Ralph Terry vs Jack Sanford. Due to rain delays, both pitchers have had significant rest since their game 5 matchup.
