Theo Epstein to sign 5 year deal with Cubs

That would certainly be interesting. I am sure Epstein can turn around the player development and scouting with the Cubs, but the Cubs have been stung for the past few years with big contracts so I don't think he will be working with an unlimited payroll like with the Red Sox.

One thing I do want to see is what they view as fair compensation for Epstein.

Also worth noting, if Theo does leave, it's looking very likely that Red Sox assistant GM Ben Cherrington would take over as GM.

I think that might be something Theo looks forward to. I kind of get the feeling he was pressured by the higher ups the last few years to make some of the recent trades/signings that seemed out of character for him.

I'd be more than happy if they took on Lackey as compensation.

Five year, $15 million deal and Epstein may have additional responsibilities, and there is no word on his title yet. I also agree with Cherington, as his name has been floated for GM vacancies the past few years, and I don't think Boston lets both get away from them.

Barring a last minute change of heart from the Red Sox in wanting to keep him, Epstein will be joining the Cubs.

Exactly. We have missed the playoffs for 2 years, and haven't won a postseason game since 08. It's obvious that there needs to be a little change.

Before that he needs to unload Soriano, Big-Z etc at any cost. The financial impact will hurt for teh time being but Ricketts needs to let him do it because if not the on the field product will suffer andthe fans and city will be less inclined to get behind helping renovate Wrigley and the area around it.

There is a lot of bad paper in Chicago. Epstein has a lot of work to do and the team is still 3-4 years away from being contenders.
