Tiger Terminates Stevie

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Tiger Woods has decided to get rid of Steve Williams as his caddie.

Woods announced on his website Wednesday that he and Williams, who have been together since March 1999, will no longer be working together.

"I want to express my deepest gratitude to Stevie for all his help, but I think it's time for a change," Woods said. "Stevie is an outstanding caddie and a friend and has been instrumental in many of my accomplishments. I wish him great success in the future."

Woods did not say who would replace Williams, or when he would return. Woods continues to rest and rehabilitate left leg injuries.

Williams has worked the last two majors for Adam Scott of Australia.

Funny thing is how Stevie knew about this for 2 weeks (happened right after the AT&T) him and Tiger talked about it. He just kept it quite not to interfer and distract Scott at the British open this past weeked. Stevie was asked about not caddying for Tiger anymore and he smiled and where do you guys hear this stuff. But he never denied it.

Not 100% sure, but I believe Stevie was also Tiger's swing coach.

Steve was key for Tiger. He did all the dirty work for him (bar rounding up the Ho's... although if Williams had no idea about all that, I'm the King of England).

He was the one swearing at the crowds to quieten them down, shoving his way through gallaries to clear a path and throwing fan's cameras in the pond when they were taking photos while Tiger was swinging.

and as for how he influenced Tigers game.

They started at the 1999 Bay Hill Invitational and won their first major at Medinah that summer when Woods called in Williams on a crucial par putt on the 18th hole that he made to hold off Sergio Garcia.

One important instance came on the 72nd hole of the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, where Williams talked Woods into hitting a sand wedge from the rough -- not the pitching wedge Woods wanted -- knowing his boss would be pumped up, the spin generated from the shot helping him hit it closer to the hole. You know the rest. Tiger holed the birdie putt to force the playoff he won over Mediate the next day.

"That was the most notable example,'' said Haney, who was Woods' coach for six major titles but left him following the Players Championship in 2010. "There were numerous times, literally in every tournament, where a caddie has an opportunity to help influence a player's decision. In my observation, there was an inordinate amount of times where Steve Williams would influence Tiger in a positive direction.

"He was just a great caddie, especially under pressure. Everyone is nervous when the tournament is on the line. The players are nervous, the caddies are nervous. I never sensed that Steve Williams had any choke in him at all. Do you know how many tournaments he won [as a caddie]? It was over 100 [144 total]. How many with Raymond Floyd? With Greg Norman? p.s. (edit) @ citizenerased, thank you very much for the post, it makes alot more sense now. I mean, I think of a caddie i think of the dude that holds the clubs (basically a ballboy). but now I see he's definitely more of a consigliere and an on field coach for a golfer.
