1. De'Anthony Thomas, Oregon

Not exactly the best "pure" back in this group but has the most elite tool with his gamebreaking speed. When put into the right system, raw physical ability trumps all else at this position. Fuck intangibles, this here all about tangibles.

2. Lache Seastrunk, Baylor

Impressive career renaissance after leaving his original school, Oregon, amidst the fallout of Willie Lyles-gate. Always had the quicks, but he's up to 205 pounds now so we're talking about the total package.

3. TJ Yeldon, Alabama

In my nightmares he slips out of the backfield undetected, catches a quick dump pass and bursts through the secondary and into the end zone. He will shine as the lead back in Tuscaloosa this fall.

4. Todd Gurley, Georgia

The thumper in the two-pronged Georgia running attack, the thunder to Keith Marshall's lightning, and a key cog in a well balanced and experienced offense, he should follow up his productive freshman campaign with more #huge numbers.

5. Ka'Deem Carey, Arizona

College football's leading rusher in 2012, seems like a safe bet to put up another great year, but he toted the rock 303 times as a junior. That's a lot of mileage to pack on a modest sized chassis.

6. Jeremy Hill, LSU

Say what you will about his off-field troubles, but this kid is the most complete back to play for the Tigers since Cecil Collins, who, say what you will about his off-field troubles, but ....

Big ole son of a gun who can really do it all. Led all returning CFB players in yards from scrimmage last year. Toted the rock 25+ times in 9 different games, and also found time to grab 37 receptions (432 yards). Think Petrino's not gonna ride this guy?

8. Dri Archer, Kent State

The anti-workhorse, a guy who only needs 10-12 carries to get his. This lil bugger put up some stupid YPC figures last year, shit like 11-carries-for-222 and 17-for-241 and shit. Yeah. Finished with an even 9.0 ypc on the season.

The 2012 production wasn't quite where we expected it to be based on his name, but maybe his second year with Lane will unlock the rest of that talent.

I don't really follow UW football much. But I would expect Melvin Gordon to be the feature back this year, not James White.

Not too married to this order, just wanted to give a good flyover of the returning 'backs. Mark and ole boy from Florida State certainly warrant mention though - I regret these omissions.

They are all interchangeable anyway. Whichever guy gets the lead role will rush for 1500 yards, 40% of which will come in the second halves of the Illinois, UMass and Tennessee Tech games.

As a back, sure. But I don't really think DAT has a defined position. You have to rank him somewhere near the top though, because he's got that elite playmaking ability that just transcends normal positional evaluation. A bit like how Tyrann Mathieu was never the best DB on his own team but was still one of the best defensive players in the country.

I just see it as...Duke Johnson can do everything D'Anthony Thomas can do...but, he's a better football player and more natural runner. I'm not knocking Thomas, but, I just see a lot of the token running backs lists around the net and none of them really list Duke (you had him at, I guess #11, so, at least you mentioned him)...but ol Duke finna be one of the best backs in the history of Miami football. He's a true generational talent. If there really is a better back in college, I'd love to see him. TJ Yeldon would be the only name that comes to mind.

Speaking of...that 2012 Recruiting Class at running back...it might have half of the nation's Top 10. Johnson, Yeldon, Gurley/Marshall, Johnathan Gray...so many good ones.

Also...Silas Redd...NOT Top 10 material.

I would hesitate to put him in the Pac10's Top 5 running backs. Thomas, Carey, Bishop Sankey, Storm Woods would definitely be ahead of him...and then, I have a feeling the Pac10 will see some breakouts that will surpass him. Bigelow from Cal. Whoever gets the nod @ Arizona State.

Could you see how many yards Gurley would have it wouldn't have been for Marshall? I am glad we have Marshall though. I have not seen a site where Yeldon was better than Gurley. Both are great. I would take Gurley over any back. Just because I am a homer. But I would have to go with Yeldon 2nd BECAUSE his position is actually RB and he is great at it. DAT is 3rd.
