Toronto would be insane to give Jose Bautista long-term deal

After the Vernon Wells trade, everyone in Toronto says this opens the opportunity to give Bautista a long-term deal?
I hope like hell Alex Anthopoulos isn't that stupid.
Haven't the Jays been through this already? Guy has career year, gets insane deal, etc...

He's worth 8-9M next year, no doubt, and likely what he'll win in arbitration.

I'd not be surprised to see the Jays give him 20-30 over 2-3 years, with buyout/performance tags all over the contract, probably a lil more than half that guarenteed.

I'd have no issue with it, the Jays have plenty of money to spend and this type of deal wouldn't be bad if his play went south.

Lets also not forget WHEN he started his excellent power hitting, which was the last 2 months of the 2009 season, which carried into 2010 through the whole season. It wasn't so much a "one year wonder" because he's already shown he can carry over through an offseason.

Lastly, lets not forget his surprisingly great play in the OF last year too. Combine with the fact that he can play a few positions (where we don't have a bonafide starter at any of them) and he's a guy I certainly don't want to leave the club.


So I think it's entirely fair to pay him what he's worth (8-9) and add on a couple years where it can grow into a 15-ish a season deal, provided he meets performance incentives. I don't think it would be hard for AA to strike such a deal with Jose, because the guy loves being here and the deal is entirely fair.

Aslong as hes getting an incentive laden contract I see no problem locking him up for the next 5-6 years. It does have the potential to end bad.. but because Bautista does rely on his raw power and rather a quick swing and some great coordination, I dont see age as having an impact on his abilities. If he can stay around 25-30 HRs a year id be satisfied, it'd be foolish to expect 50+ again.

A long term deal wouldn't be insane as long as it's not as exorbitant as the Wells deal. Another retarded contract would be insane, yes, but a reasonable extension shouldn't be out of the question.

So far he's still proving to be one of the most feared hitters in baseball. It's hardly a one year wonder. It's the product of excellent coaching and finetuning of his swing. Since he was in the minors he's always been regarded as a high power guy but he had holes in his swing. He finally got them fixed and now he's crushing the ball.

I was so amused with America's sudden shock at how epic Roy Halladay has been with the Phillies, I mean, you'd all not be surprised if you were aware there was a ball club in Canada.
