Torry Holt's career possibly over

The New England Patriots placed veteran WR Torry Holt on injured reserve on Sunday.

The 11-year veteran was competing for a spot on the Patriots' roster, but was sidelined by a knee injury.

It could be the end a distinguished career for Holts, 34. He was a seven-time Pro Bowler in 10 seasons wiht the St. Louis Rams before spending last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Holt's agent, Kennard McGuire, told ESPN the move to IR was a "great disappointment for Torry."

He caught 51 passes for 72 yards and zero touchdowns last season. Holt was no lock to make the Patriots' roster even if healthy, with competition from Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Brandon Tate and rookie Taylor Price, among others.

If this is indeed the end of his career... is he a Hall-of-Famer?

Only NFL player in history to have 1,300+ yards recieving 6 seasons in a row. He had a 7 to 8 year period as good as anybody, ever.

Much better player than Monk or Reed, not even really worthy of debate. Carter shouldnt be a fringe HOF'er, it's a crime he hasnt gotten in while somebody like Michael Irvin has. Sterling Sharpe's carrer was too short. Holt & Carter should be locks.

How would Holt be left out of the NFL? In a time with guys like Harrison, Moss, and Owens, he was arguably the best WR in the league over a 5+ year span.

Definitely a HoF. The dude was a straight up beast in the Rams' hey-days. I don't think Warner could have put half his numbers if it was only Bruce he was throwing to. Holt was Fitz before Larry Fitzgerald was Fitz.

And Marc Bulger would have been no better than Kyle Boller or AJ Feeley w/o him.

Absolutely a HOFer. He was top 3 for almost his entire career, and for a brief stretch he was arguably the best WR in the game, period. He has the rings, he has the stats, he was a great route runner, a great possession guy, and he could also hit you with a big play.

I think it goes without saying, but you never know with the committee.

The statistical comparisons of Holt to Monk and Reed miss the point. Monk was 2 eras prior to Holt, and Reed was 1 era prior.

And you are also comparing Holt to the lowest common denominator. Monk is one of the weakest WRs in the HOF, and Reed isn't even in the HOF. And Reed's HOF resume is much stronger than Holt's...equal stats in a less-passing friendly era, equal pro bowls, and Reed basically doubles Holt's postseason numbers.

Holt was a nice WR, but I think he's more comparable to guys like Rod Smith, Jimmy Smith, Isaac Bruce. I don't think Holt was an extraordinary WR. And I think Tim Brown should get into the HOF before Holt.

I don't know how Reed's resume is "much stronger" than Holt's.

Reed played for 16 years, and the second half of his career bled into the passer friendly era. It's not like he played in 1970. Holt played for 11 years. So hard to compare career totals.

Reed had four 1,000 yard seasons in 16 years. Holt had six consecutive years over 1,300 yards, multiple 1,600 yard seasons, and only dipped under 1,000 twice (rookie year & final year as a backup). Reed has only three 80+ catch seasons, while Holt only caught less than 80 balls three times. And Reed was the clear cut #1 WR for the majority of his career, while Holt was splitting balls with another potential HOF WR, and the greates pass catching RB of all time.

I don't think you can make the argument that Reed was ever the best WR during his era (even disqualifying Rice), but you can make that argument for Holt.

Reed played double the postseason games as Holt, so the better postseason numbers should be a given.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find many GM's who would start a team with Tim Brown before Torry Holt.

No way. Tim Brown was stuck with some of the worst QBs of his era, and he still put up big numbers. He didn't have great speed, but he was a great all-around player. He was a very good return man and an excellent blocker. I think Tim Brown would have been good on any team in the NFL, whereas Holt was greatly aided by playing in a pass-heavy offense surrounded by great players.
