Trading Calvin Johnson

The local sports radio station has been debating this the past couple of days. They think that trading Calvin would help out the Lions more than it would hurt them. Obviously we would trade him for draft picks and they were saying we could get a 1, 2, 3 this year or maybe a first this year and the following year and some other picks this year.

Personally, I agree with them. Keeping Calvin here does absolutely nothing for this team other than help get other receivers open. He had a good year last year but we went 0-16, so he wasn't exactly winning us games. Trading Calvin will allow us to draft more good players, especially on defense. It may hurt Staffords numbers but I think building our defense is more important than that.

I think teams like the Giants, Ravens, Dolphins, and maybe the Redskins would be interested.

Thing is, his contract is up after the 2011 season I believe. We'll have to pay him a boatload of money, probably more than any other WR in the league. Plus he may not even resign, so at least this way we'll get something for him. Also, we probably won't be competing for the playoffs in 2011, we'll be a 5-6 win team by then.

Thing is, once you take him out of the Lions offense, they become downright disgusting. Teams can do whatever they want since you don't have a good runningback and no real #2, let alone a #1 to replace him with.

If you trade him, you're probably looking at 2 first round picks max.

That wouldn't be them main reason just something to consider. The main reason is to load up on draft picks and build up our defense and offensive line.

Nail on the head. It was hard enough last year when we traded Roy away (mainly cause he was one of my favorite players), but if they give Megatron away I'm seriously done with the Lions.

You would have to be retarded to trade Calvin Johnson. He's top 5 at his position, he's young (5 productive seasons left minimum). What are you going to get from the draft that is better than a young player proven to be top 5 at his position? Isn't that what you aim to draft in the first place?

Since the draft is a crapshoot anyway, you are just as likely to end up with a bust (a complete cap drain) and a solid starter. For more money then you would pay CJ.

I'm expecting him to be a Redskin shortly.

this is one of those weeks were there is absolutely nothing to talk about in town so valenti and foster just drum up some stupid shit to get some calls. Its absolutely stupid to dump Cj for draft picks when you need him to help develop stafford and pettigrew. On top of that nobody knows what is going to happen post 2010. next year is uncapped and who knows where they go form there so speculating on payroll is just rediculous.

I've started to tire on valenti even though when he first hit the radio it was a breath of fresh air in this meeechigan centric area where your other option was stoney and wojo both who were permantly on thier knees for michigan. Today for example talking about the mcshay mock. not even 6 months ago everyone on his board and him included were gerald mccoy needs to be the pick. now its we cant get suh were shit out of luck. its rediculous.

His contract isn't up until 2011. I think the earliest this should even be considered is next year, if at all. Why not take at least another year and see what happens.
