News has been breaking regularly about HBO’s new crime series: True Detective. The show will most likely enter production soon and fans of The Wire in particular are waiting on pins and needles for the latest tidbits because the show looks to bring HBO back to the contemporary crime underworld. While series plot details are thin we are privy to a most of the main cast members at this point. Here are the True Detective cast members that we can confirm so far:

Wow what a show-stopping cast! We’re sure this cast is going to expand a bit more before it hits HBO’s air so check back once in a while for the latest faces. No premiere date to report just yet as the show hasn’t even been produced yet.

After American Horror Story scored good ratings and even better buzz with the revelation the series would be an anthology, it was only a matter of time before a similar concept popped up and began attracting more high-profile creatives and stars. As it turns out, that idea happens to be True Detectives, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.


True Detectives concerns the story of Louisiana detectives Martin Hart (Harrelson) and Rust Cohle (McConnaughey) and their search for a serial killer that spans 17 years. Reportedly, the series will see the case begin in 1995 and carry through to present day. During that time, the pursuit of the murderer and their partnership leaves an indelible mark on each man’s life.


Acclaimed novelist and short story writer Nic Pizzolatto, whose experience writing for television has been with the similarly-themed AMC series The Killing, developed the concept and is handling writing duties on the show. Meanwhile, equally acclaimed director Cary Fukunaga (Sin Nombre, Jane Eyre) is onboard to direct all eight episodes of the series. Whether or not either writer or director plans to take part – in the event that a second season happens – is not immediately clear.


Given the talent behind it, and the relatively short commitment, it’s easy to see why True Detectives was able to land such well-known stars as McConaughey and Harrelson. For McConaughey, True Detectives will mark the first time he’s done a series for television; for Harrelson, it marks the first time he has been back on a regular series since his role as Woody Boyd ended on Cheers in 1993. Of course, since that time, Harrelson has appeared in a slew of feature films like the current box office champ The Hunger Games, as well as earning two Academy Award nominations for his performances in The People vs. Larry Flynt and The Messenger.

The series will also mark the third time real-life friends McConaughey and Harrelson have appeared onscreen together. The duo previously worked together on Ron Howard’s Edtv and the little-seen Surfer, Dude.


True Detectives is currently being shopped around to various cable networks, but given the star-power involved, as well as the buzz around Fukunaga and Pizzolatto, it would seem like a no-brainer for any network, so expect interest to heat up quickly. Ideal candidates are likely AMC and FX, but with Netflix lurking about lately, contemplating picking up ABC’s The River, and briefly considering resurrecting FOX’s Terra Nova, the serialized nature of True Detectives sounds as though it would be right up the company’s alley.

HBO has announced it is putting on the fast track a drama called TRUE DETECTIVE. It will be an eight-part drama series starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. What is surprising is that it is not heading towards a test pilot but has earned straight to series status. It is being labeled a high concept cop drama that will utilize multiple perspectives and timeframes to tell its story.
The work is written by Nic Pizzolatto who wrote AMC’s “The Killing.” It tells of two detectives, Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, played by McConaughey and Harrelson respectively. Their lives collide and entwine during a seventeen-year manhunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. The story takes us to the reopened case in 2012 and flashes back to the year of the murders in 1995. All eight episodes of this stylized drama are to be directed by Cary Fukunaga of the recent ”Jane Eyre” movie.

In a twist this show is touted as an anthology series. If it is renewed, each new season will feature different characters responding to a different crime in a different locale. It will be an examination of “true detectives” and the process they go through to solve the crime. For its initial run I think Matthew & Woody will make a great combination. In fact, I’d dare to say that I wish it were a continuing series that they would both commit to as opposed to starting with new leads each season. Then again, think of all the combinations of actors they could get each year.

TRUE DETECTIVE will be McConaughey’s first foray at a TV series and Harrelson returns to the format after being involved in HBO Films’ GAME CHANGE. No premiere date has been attached to this news but, the term fast track to me indicates we may see this Fall. HBO Watch will keep you posted. This comes right on the heels of the cancelled The Corrections. It’s interesting to watch how HBO chooses to spend it’s money and limited time slots. What do you think of the decision to green light True Detective?

I do like how if they make this follow the books, then we can have a different set of actors and actress for each season. Can get big name people to do a quick 8 part series.
