If you believe WWE, all of their programming outdraws every other show in the history of the modern world.
But, among first run cable programming, Smackdown last week was #1 with a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49. If you count reruns, it was 5th behind Family Guy episodes, Robot Chicken and American Dad.
Smackdown (8-10pm) had 2.7M viewers and that 0.8 rating in the 18-49. TUF (9-11pm) had 947k viewers and a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demo.

-TUF had 947,000 viewers.
-The random FX Movie following TUF grew to 993,000 viewers (and maintained the 0.5 in the 18-49 adults demo)
-Fucking serious. A 'My Wife and Kids' rerun at 3:58AM drew 969,000 viewers and a 0.4...
-A 1:45am airing of George Lopez's old sitcom drew 976,000 with a 0.4....
The top 3 shows that drew less live viewers than TUF (947k) among the top 18-49 adults shows:
-Discovery Channel's show on the Bering Sea Gold at 11pm (853,000)
-After Midnight Sportscenter on ESPN (919,000)
-Around the Horn on ESPN at 5pm (771,000)
-The 3:24am airing of My Wife&Kids (919,000)
-5am episode of Yes Dear (910,000)

Take away the whole Friday night issue, which does kill general viewership, what day doesn't have an impact on the quality of the show.
It's the same basic formula they've used for years, focus on some asinine crap in the house where guys get stir crazy or just look to make a name for themselves (the Junie Browning/Jeremy May deal. Episode 2 had the guy in the pink hair pissed off at someone else because of no particular reason. Then the someone else gets pissed at the pink haired dude because he's pissed at him......ULTIMATE FIGHTING ROCKS!
Obviously, it's a reality show and as long as there are networks putting them on air, there will be stupid bullshit because they think it attracts the casual channel flippers. But none of this does a damn thing about making ANY of these fighters come off like stars....which is the #1 point of TUF to begin with.
You watch TUF and you figure out that Shane Carwin is a smart dude and Roy Nelson is an undisciplined, fat, annoying slob of a fighter who doesn't work well in a team setting (according to the show's theme 2 episodes in). Awesome.
Let's face it though, TUF isn't about us as viewers. It's still churning along for the people who have no idea what the first few seasons were like. It's about the casual people who don't know any better....but ironically, the number of those people watching is falling faster than Strikeforce's lifespan.
To break it down----there are 3 significant problems with TUF in 2012 and beyond
1-None of the fighters over the past however many seasons have amounted to much. You have to go back to Nelson (maybe Schaub??) and he was really a ringer. Before him, you can talk about Ryan Bader or Vinny Magalhaes.
2-Been there, done that. Over 7 years, 16 seasons of the same storylines.
3-Personalities. It's one thing if guys break through and become reasons to watch the show during the season and then tail off when they actually fight in the UFC. Even then, nobody has come off like a star DURING taping (or the one live season) in forever. Matter of fact, the only reason to watch over the past 3-4 years has been KIMBO SLICE. He's the one guy anyone gave a shit about to watch TUF and that was what? 2008 or 2009?
so easy to go on a TUF rant...to end on a positive note....how about some ideas to improve the concept or come up with a new format entirely?
A new format is a must, and like I said earlier, Wednesday night is the best night imo for TUF. 9 o'clock cst, and I would watch it every week. I only watch the last half(at least I did last friday) anyways. As for a new format, I think having 32 fighters and letting them all fight on the first episode is a good idea. Problem being nobody saw that mess. I saw two fights and only watched those while the girl was getting ready to go out. Left shortly after.
They have tried different things throughout the seasons:
Just bring in 16 fighters, or bring in 32 and let them scrap to get in the house. I think the latter is more entertaining.
Show more house, or more training? They have done both, sadly, showing more house stuff will get more viewers. I prefer training, and bringing in different guest coaches. That for me, as a more hard core fan, is better to watch.
I think, not sure, that they have brought in a guy or two into the second round after they lost the first. Just because they brought a damn good fight. That is something that will make the fights more interesting in the beginning because you always have a chance to make it back in with that.
TUF ideas are going stale. I dont know what they would/could do to make it better. I think they have dried up the well. It might be time to just shut it down for a year or two, and bring it back once they get some good ideas rolling to make it fresh.
