Says that's the target date and they want Silva/Sonnen depending on And1's health.

Remember, Fox has said the four shows on the network next year will each be 90-minutes long...good for 2-3 fights.


Gotta admit, I don't see the benefit of putting Silva/Sonnen on free TV if that's what happens. You don't have many money fights coming up (Lesnar/Overeem, GSP/Diaz...that's about it) and Silva/Sonnen 2 should at least match their first fight (700k) on PPV.
 
I don't get it. PPV numbers are down, and they're trying to get people to pay for Shogun/Hendo while giving away Silva in a rematch of the best big fight in their recent history. It seems like they're not even trying to get the casual fan's dollar anymore. Velasquez/Dos Santos is exactly the type of fight they should be putting on Fox, even though the fight sucked. It's an important one, but one that wouldn't have produced a good buyrate. So they could sell it as a "big fight" without throwing money out the window. Guys like GSP, Penn, Silva, and even Brock while he's still quasi-relevant shouldn't appear on free TV ever.

I think if Cain/JDS was a great fight, you would not be seeing Silva/Sonnen on FOX. They will never ever never ever admit it, but they are pissed about that fight and they know damn well not a single new viewer was impressed by that shit.

Silva/Sonnen is unlikely to produce a similar result, plus they can sell the best fighter on the planet angle, and this will destroy the record number Cain/JDs did.

I think the message is clear. They are content doing 250,000k on PPV and FOX is now the priority so that they can attempt to attract new fans.
 
Empire, I admittedly don't keep up with UFC numbers as much as I keep up with MMA in general. But I thought Penn was still a bigger draw than most of their big fighters not named Brock, Silva or GSP.

Wrestling went down that slippery slope. Once you give away comparable, if not better product on free TV as you do on expensive PPV, you essentially write off half your PPV revenue. It'd be the same if HBO gave away a Pacman fight for free. It puts in a lot of people's mindset that they shouldn't pay for the sport again unless they're going in person.

Also, that fight lost the UFC a ton of money. It was like the anti-Bonnar/Griffin. A platform that a lot of new fans heard about (even though their promotion kinda really sucked), and tuned into. And the fight stunk. People love close exciting fights or crazy Mike Tyson-esque knockouts. This was a quick, somewhat sloppy knockout. I was in a bar watching the Blues game with some friends and they also had the fight on. Some people at the other end of the bar were VERY interested in it and after 35 minutes of build-up, the result just had them saying "THAT was it? Glad I didn't pay for that." You didn't hear anything about that fight after it. No one that night or Monday morning. And places like here, all the talk is about how it sucked. I really think the UFC is barreling towards becoming largely irrelevant in mainstream sports. Like the NHL, many are aware but don't really care.
 
I agree with all of that.

I'm not defending that strategy, i'm just trying to formulate where they are coming from.

All of this shit could have been avoided if FOX agreed to air the Guida/Bendo fight, which would have garnered all sorts of Griffin/Bonner type buzz.
 
I didn't hear about that, but damn. Having ANY other fight on the card doubles down on your chances that the night sucks. Especially with a Guida slugfest. What a dopey move on Fox's part.

Supposedly, Dana confirmed the show and said it would be 8-10 pm with 4 fights...ie, no title match.
 
Silva/Sonnen could possibly be the biggest PPV in the history of the UFC, especially if the rest of the card is solid. No way they waste that on free tv. Sounds like they'll announce the Fox card on Monday.
 
Dana wanted to make the Shogun vs Rampage fight for Japan, but I doubt Shogun will be ready in time now. I think it's going to be business as usual w/the free cards, I'd be surprised if it's anyone with a PPV cut in their contract.
 
Bonnar called out Rampage on twitter, which is telling, because Bonnar is a guy who understands business, so he may have been told beforehand that he was getting Rampage on FOX if he beat Kingsbury and came out of it unscathed. It would also explain his safe fight strategy.
