UFC Plans to Counter Program CBS Show with Live Event

According to Meltzer, the UFC is planning a live Spike special on 4/17. No main event set (it won't be Silva/Akiyama) but they are working towards a semi-final featuring Swick/Serra.

He also reports Strikeforce is considering moving their CBS show the week after to go head to head with the WEC PPV.

apparently its already been confirmed, but no fights announced yet. it would make sense for strikeforce to push their show back a week cause going up against the WEC's first PPV>>>>>Free card on Spike, but if they did they would be directly going up against the Super Six Boxing Classic which would make no sense whatsoever for them to do.

doesnt really matter, cause if its free people are gonna tune in regardless. swick/serra is a decent matchup though not headlining quality for sure.

latest rumor has its gonna be at the vanderbilt arena in tennessee. same state as the strikeforce show. serra in the main event, kimbo vs. toney on the card

Memorial gym? wtf??? It holds a little under 15k if i remember correctly, BUT the floor is raised about 6 feet from the ground seats. Then you add the octagon raised in the air as well, those floor seats would be like sitting front row at an imax movie.

I doubt they get Toney this quick in the octagon. He has said he wants to have a boxing match first before fighting for the UFC around June or July.

Bluffing isn't the right word since UFC did talk with Nashville about a show and were calling up fighters.

Sounds like they couldn't get a good main event so they cooled off on the idea.

if this show doesnt happen, it was a bluff, they had there media outlets spreading out this rumors as facts and trying to get Strikeforce to jump

really sad the UFC has to resort to these tactics, actually I blame the 'MMA Media' for letting these guys control them so easily with press passes and the like

it was a bluff (if it still doesnt happen), plain and simple, they threw together a counter to an affliction PPV very quickly

they didnt want to go head to head and get smoked by CBS, no reason to counter a CBS show with a live Spike show, they will save that for when/if Strikeforce does a PPV

Meltzer has said that they contacted fighters to try to put fights together.


To me, all this means is they could not book a worthwhile main event so they dropped it.
