Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer and athletic director Gene Smith acknowledged having committed secondary NCAA violations in recent months, according to a report in The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer.

The ancillary errors by Meyer and Smith are part of 46 secondary violations in 21 Ohio State sports reported since last May 30. The Plain Dealer obtained the list of violations through an open records request.

Meyer is reported to have said "good luck" to football recruit Noah Spence at a Dec. 16 high school game, violating NCAA rules prohibiting direct contact with recruits during competition. Spence, the nation's No. 4 recruit overall and No. 2-rated defensive end in the ESPNU 150, committed to Ohio State during an official visit to campus days after the game and signed with the Buckeyes in February.

Ohio State learned of the contact through a newspaper photo that showed Meyer apparently talking to Spence. Meyer informed Ohio State of the contact two days after the game.

"I went to say 'hello' and 'good luck' to his coach and as I was walking off the field Noah said, 'hello,' and I said 'good luck,' before the game," Meyer wrote in a text message to The Plain Dealer. "Nothing more. Nothing to hide. All good."

Smith and alumni association CEO Archie Griffin, a former star running back for the Buckeyes, recorded a personalized video for football recruit Ezekiel Elliott for his official visit to Ohio State on March 31. Recruiting videos are prohibited by the NCAA. Elliott verbally committed to Ohio State as part of the 2013 recruiting class.

Other secondary violations included text messages sent by current assistant Stan Drayton and former assistant Dick Tressel to a recruit and the parents of a recruit, respectively.

Ohio State's only major violations in football since May 30, 2011 involved players being overpaid for work by former booster Bobby DiGeronimo. Those violations, along with others committed by players and former coach Jim Tressel during the tattoo/merchandise scandal, led to Ohio State losing scholarships and receiving a one-year postseason ban from the NCAA for the 2012 season.

Before a Pennsylvania high school state title game, Urban Meyer said "good luck" to a potential recruit. This kind of contact between a college coach and a recruit on a game day is forbidden.

• Assistant coach Mike Vrabel was hit with a secondary violations for using chewing tobacco on the sidelines during games last season. This is actually an NCAA violation. No, I don't know why either.

• On August 20, 2011, assistant Dick Tressel responded to a text message from the parents of a recruit asking which gate they should use to enter Ohio Stadium. It is a violation to text a recruit's parents.

Chewing tobacco on the sidelines? Saying "good luck" in passing when the recruit says hi? All of these are stupid for any program to have to report.

The NCAA is studying ways to streamline its rulebook “down to something sensible.”

It’s the litany of secondary violations committed by Ohio State’s football program that highlight just why the NCAA should perhaps spend more time wrangling in real outlaws in the game. According to a Cleveland Plain Dealer report following an open records request, the Buckeyes reported 46 violations in 21 sports since May 30 of last year.

That’s the same day, coincidentally, that coach Jim Tressel was forced to resign amid severe extra benefits violations. Among the reported secondary missteps, at least a half dozen were football related.

They include:

— Coach Urban Meyer wishing recruit Noah Spence “Good luck” before his state championship game in December. That sort of contact on game day violates the bylaws.

— Assistant football coach Mike Vrabel used smokeless tobacco on the sidelines during games. According to the documents obtained by the paper, OSU got an anonymous tip from an area health teacher. The NCAA forbids tobacco use during games or practices.

— Football staff member Kirk Barton ordered 20 “JT” bracelets for $5 each for players to wear in honor of Tressel. Barton sold the bracelets for $15 to ensure he’d stay clear of the NCAA. It wasn’t good enough, because players had access to something not available to the general public.

— On Aug. 20, a parent of a recruit sent a text message to assistant coach Dick Tressel to ask which gate the parent should use to enter the stadium for a scrimmage. The coach responded, but texting the parents of a recruit is a violation.

— In December of 2010, five players took five recruits to a movie. The cab ride the players used, however, took them $1 to $5 over the maximum of $60 spending money.

“In general, if you’re not reporting numerous secondary violations, then from the NCAA perspective, that could be considered a bad sign,” Florida attorney Michael Buckner, an expert in NCAA law, told the Plain Dealer. “If I was an OSU fan, I wouldn’t be alarmed by it. That means Ohio State is doing the right thing.”

Athletic director Gene Smith violated a bylaw as well. Smith and Archie Griffin were supposed to meet with recruit Ezekiel Elliott during the player’s official visit. But with Smith and Griffin both on the road with the men’s basketball team, they recorded a video message instead for Elliott. That’s against the rules.

“The easy thing would be to let it go, and not have the numbers (of violations),” OSU spokesman Dan Wallenberg told the paper. “But the numbers I think are good because that speaks to the culture we have.”

Meyer didn't self-report that he had illegal contact with a recruiting prospect until after there was a photo in a newspaper of Meyer illegally talking to a prospect. And the extent of Ohio State's investigation was to ask Meyer "what did you say"? Hmm...great investigation. How about going a little deeper...like asking the recruit what Meyer talked about? Otherwise you are just taking Meyer at his word. Thats fine for the OSU fanboys on this forum, but I would expect a thrice-burned University to have a little bit more skepticism.
