Valentijn Overeem Injured, Strikeforce Debut Nixed

Less than a week after losing the novelty of former NFL great Herschel Walker’s second bout in the cage, Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu 2 has suffered another blow.

Valentijn Overeem, brother of Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, is injured and will be unable to fight Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva as planned on the Dec. 4 fight card on Showtime, said MMAWeekly.com sources. The nature of the injury was not disclosed.

The bout was to be Valentijn’s Strikeforce debut. He is currently on a two-fight winning streak, and was expected to be a strong addition to the promotion’s heavyweight class.

Silva, after losing to Fabricio Werdum at the end of 2009, surely wants to remain on the fight card and build on the momentum he started with a win over former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski in May.

Strikeforce has a strong roster of heavyweights, but with the bout being just one week away coupled with strong rumors of an upcoming heavyweight tournament, it sounds as if there aren’t too many fighters suitable for the Showtime telecast willing to step in on such short notice to face a fighter the caliber of Silva.

Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu 2 features former Pride champion Dan Henderson fighting former Strikeforce champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral in the main event. The card also features a strong support cast featuring Matt Lindland against Robbie Lawler and Paul Daley facing Scott Smith.

still a solid card with Hendo-Babalu, Lindland - Lawler and Daley-Smith but the loss of Walker and Overeem definitely sucks. i feel bad for Bigfoot, i hope they find someone for him soon..

It's a solid show, but it's obviously not as deep as it was a week ago.

Obviously the two undercard fights are made for Lawler and Daley to win. If neither do, massive lulz will be had.

Strikeforce, where heavyweight fights never happen.

Coker has made too many deals with the devil. Fedor calls his own shots, which is why Dana can't be bothered with him and refuses to bend over backwards. He allows Alistair Overeem make K1 a priority. He has Cormier fighting in other places, making him unavailable to ever step in. He has Lashley dangling in the wind with no contract.

I understand some of these guys wouldnt be in Strikeforce to begin with without the sweethart one sided deals, but what is the point of this supposed deep heavyweight class, if he can never put together fights? Say what you want about Dana White, but all these m'fers would be fighting 3 times per year, and he would have replacements ready when guys get injured. The Walker fight off, now this fight is off. Might as well put Bigfoot in there with the bum that was fighting Walker, both guys have trained and at least it would be something.

Would it be that hard to call up Tim Sylvia or Jeff Monson or Gabe Gonzaga or Kerry Schall or Wes Shivers or Dan Christenson or Chad Griggs or Tony Lopez or Dave Hermann or FUCKING ANYBODY WITH A PULSE just to get some fights for these guys?? And where is Barnett? Where is Kharintonov? Will the ever fight, or is Coker just collecting names to rattle off at pressers?

Right, I understand that some of these guys are unavailable, but the point is there are guys hanging around under contract, and plenty of "name" fighters available as free agents.

And why the fuck is Brett Rogers fighting WARPATH Villareal in front of 40 people in Canada? This is what i'm talking about with Coker. He let's guys like Rogers, Cormier, and Overeem fight elsewhere, and then they arent available when he needs them. Give these guys 3 fights per year, and you wont need to let them work someplace else.
