Vernon Davis is the best TE in the league right now. Throw in the fact he has Alex Smith throwing him the ball it makes the season he had that much better.

I think ive had a tight grip on davis' nuts since he was in college. No homo, but its good to see him finally accel in the league and make a name for himself.

Wow, way to talk out your ass. Vernon Davis has been known as among the best blocking TEs in the league for 2 seasons now. Singletary called him THE best blocking TE in the league last year, and I'm sure that has something to do with being his coach, but I doubt he'd have said it about a "horrid" blocker.

Vernon Davis is a better blocker than he is a receiver.

I don't know if I'm ready to call VD the best TE in the league... Whitten and Gates have several years under their belts proving it, and Davis still has terrible hands and still doesn't handle traffic as well as I'd like. He's up there though, definitely the best big play threat at TE.

Not sure where you're getting that. Also the last sentence of that post is laughable. Vernon Davis is a terrible run blocker and a below average pass blocker. I will concede the fact that Davis was better last year then this year, but he still was an average blocking TE at best.

Gates is an above average blocker, and is a better receiving threat. Witten is a much better blocker and is just as dangerous. Davis is nowhere near the best TE in the NFL.

Also, Ron Jaworski calls him the best blocker on the team... that's including the offensive linemen, notably LT Joe Staley, who's pretty damn good.

Tony G had more receptions, I personally would take Tony G if I wanted to win now. I think Tony G has sticky hands and can catch any ball thrown his way. I also like Dre and Eminem!

If Tony G was the only weapon on the team like Davis is for the 49ers Tony would have put up the numbers as well. Ryan and Redman had to split it up to White, Jenkins, and Tony G so all of the balls didn't come his way.

Glad to see you have a source for this opinion, but I'm afraid they're plain wrong... or hell, maybe Vernon had a shitty year blocking, I'll concede that.

Now, I have coached. I do know the sport pretty well. Last July I had access to a wonderful program that the NFL distributes to its teams and media outlets that allows an individual to watch every play of the previous NFL season from 3 different angles, and I personally watched a lot of Davis' play. Not every play, certainly, but I never saw him miss a block. He didn't always get a ton of push because he has a tendency to stay high, but he seals his end in the running game, he gave up no sacks of his own fault (this is when he was playing under Martz and blocked the majority of the time).

So I question those who made that site, personally. But either way, your argument still doesn't work, because you called Gates the best TE in the league, and his blocking number on that site are worse than Davis'. His run blocking numbers are absolutely horrid and his pass blocking are slightly better than Davis'... I don't know about you, but I'd say a TEs run blocking is a bit more important than his pass blocking. Or is Gates so far better than Davis as a receiver that he overshadows his blocking? If you can make that claim with a straight face, I'll commend you.

Or, as I believe, are you just being inconsistent and grasping at straws to make your argument?

Gonzalez definitely has better hands, I don't question that... but we're talking a 4.3 40, breaking the record for the position in both the vertical leap and the bench press. Overall physical skills, it's not close, and that's not a knock at Gonzo, that's just how physically imposing Davis is.

His touchdown today was a go route on the outside. How many TEs can you send deep on the outside and score a 78 yard TD with? Gonzalez can't do that.

I would say the weapons around him are a big part of the reason he did do so well this year.

Again, not knocking Gonzalez, he's one of my favorite players, but he's not the player he was 5 years ago, and he's not as good as Vernon Davis right now.

I'm a 49er fan, and even I can see that VD has been average at blocking.

Singletary is just tooting his horn because of their relationship.
