Veteran forward Tim Thomas signs with Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks have signed free agent forward Tim Thomas.

The 6-foot-10 Thomas, a 12-year veteran, played for the Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks and Chicago last season. He averaged 8.5 points and 3.1 rebounds in his 64 games, 36 with the Knicks, 18 with the Bulls and 10 with the Clippers. He played 191/2 minutes a game.

Thomas has made 946 career 3-pointers, shooting 37 percent from long range in 806 games. He made 41 percent of his 3-point attempts last season.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed Tuesday. Thomas has also played for Philadelphia, Milwaukee and Phoenix.

Tim Thomas has been washed up for like 7 years now, aside from the one good playoffs he had with Phoenix that you mention.

This move doesn't make the Mavs better at all, and arguably makes them worse given that Tim Thomas rarely tries.

Yeah, except for the fact that Crawford is 29, not 33 like Thomas, averaged 19.5 a game last year not 8.5, and get this, he played a full season which Thomas hasn't done since 2006. Not to mention Crawford is actually in shape and capable of playing up tempo basketball, meanwhile Thomas weights like 270 lbs and has bad knees......Try again.

I get the feeling that the mavs are trying to put together temporary pieces that could really push the Lakers/Nuggets in the West this season. It's a low risk because we are signing these guys (Gooden/Thomas) to 1 year contracts so we will be financially fit for next summer's free agent bonanza. Factor in Erick Dampier's monster expiring contract, that we may use in a sign and trade, and we have a legit shot at a superstar player. I think Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson are doing a good job responding to the Gortat/Bass disaster.

Yea but when you add them and Marion, a great defensive player with huge athletisim, and only trading Stackhouse, who was injured most of last season and didnt play in the playoffs where the Mavs destroyed the Spurs, then it is.

Marion hasn't been a great defender for a few years now. He's older too and not as athletic as he was during his "Matrix" days. Nothing but a solid perimeter defender with little offense at this stage. The days of him being elite defensively and athletically are stuck in, well, 2004 like I said.

Mavs will be equal or worse this year.

Well when we are talking about the fortunes of a 50 win team vs. a 47 win team, you'd think their age would be a factor when looking at the next season. Especially given that the Hawks have 3 starters under 25 (provided Marvin comes back) and the Mavs will be rebuilding in a year or two anyway.

A bunch of bad contracts on that team too. Erick Dampier made a million for every point plus rebound he averaged per game game last year, Marion is making a cool 17 million, an absurd amount for a guy who averaged 13/9 last year.

So yeah, I'll take the 47 win team largely consisting of guys that are still 2 years away from their prime over the 50 win team from last year that is a year or two over it's prime and will have to blow it all up again anyway when they finish near the bottom. You tell me which situation is better from a fan's perspective.
