Defenceman Lubomir Visnovsky has filed a grievance through the NHL Players' Association to void his trade to New York Islanders, according to Newsday.

Arthur Staple of Newsday reports that Visnovsky claims his no-trade clause - put in place for his contract with the Edmonton Oilers - is still valid because he did not invoke it when he was dealt to the Anaheim Ducks in 2010.

"This isn't an issue with the (Islanders)," Visnovsky's agent Neil Sheehy told Newsday. "It's a matter for the NHLPA/NHL to decide. He has a no-trade clause."

An arbitrator is expected to make a decision on the claim. Visnovsky has one season remaining on his contract which will pay him $3 million next season, while his contract carries a cap hit of $5.6 million.

The Anaheim Ducks traded Visnovsky, 35, to the Islanders last month for a second-round pick in the 2013 Draft.

In 49 games with the Ducks last season, Visnovsky has scored five goals and added 22 assists.

Visnovsky's had his best offensive season in 2010-11, his first full year with the Ducks, where he tied his career goal output with 18 and set a high with 50 assists and 68 points. He was also a career high plus-18. The Topolcany, Slovakia native was drafted in the fourth round, 118th overall of the 2000 NHL Draft by the Los Angeles Kings. He has scored 116 goals and 329 assists in 752 career NHL games with the Kings, Oilers and Ducks.

Sucks for the Isles, and they actually were trying to improve the team with this one. If someone this deal is voided, combined with not re-signing Parenteau, I think the Isles are looking at another finish at the bottom of the conference.

The league announced Wednesday that an arbitrator has upheld the June 22 trade that sent the veteran defenseman from the Anaheim Ducks to the Islanders in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2013 NHL draft.

Visnovsky had filed a grievance through the players' association in July, contending that the trade should be voided because he still had a no-trade clause and the Ducks had not asked for his permission to waive it.

Visnovsky played his last three seasons with Anaheim and amassed 108 points in 165 games. He had his best year in 2010-11 when he scored 18 goals and notched 50 assists.

The Islanders acquired Visnovsky in order to get some more offense and power-play help from their blue line.
