We have been hearing rumblings of a new camera Microsoft is developing for their Xbox 360 system. According to the reports, the cam is part of a grand scheme for them to compete in the motion control department, especially against rival Nintendo and more specifically, the company’s Wii. Although, besides video game blogs reporting the rumors, no other major mews source has come out with such information.
That has all changed because the “super reliable†Wall Street Journal, is informing its readers that Microsoft is indeed creating such a technology. According to the newspaper, the cam is using a 3-D program which is supposedly more accurate than previous camera based games, aka the Eyetoy.
Not to long ago, the Seattle based computer company, acquired a start-up in Israeli called 3DV Systems Ltd.. The new company was developing a 3-D camera and before they were purchased, held patent rights. The WSJ is speculating this is the same technology being used in the new alleged Xbox camera.
Apparently the way this device will work and is rather simple. The player sets up the camera in front of their television set, and moves his or her legs, arms, legs or whatever part of the body that can be put in motion. From there, the camera has the ability to pick up the slightest movement, and the player has no reason to hold any controller or remote whatsoever.
Both Microsoft and Systems Ltd. are unable to comment. Hopefully we get more information when E3 roles around.
