Sources: Warner likely to retire

Arizona's next loss could mark the last time that quarterback Kurt Warner plays in an NFL game.

He always could change his mind, but this likely will be the 38-year-old Warner's final NFL season, according to sources close to the quarterback.


Warner has been voted to five Pro Bowls, won two NFL MVP awards, one Super Bowl and became the second quarterback in history to throw more than 100 touchdown passes for two NFL franchises.

Earlier this season, Warner suffered a concussion that raised questions about his future.

All of a sudden this morning, the idea that quarterback Kurt Warner could be playing his final game today before retirement has gained some media steam. It’s no surprise since Warner has considered the topic after each of the last few seasons. The “will-he-or-won’t-he” isn’t anything in concrete though; I had to smile when I read the ESPN.com report: “He always could change his mind, but this likely will be the 38-year-old Warner’s final NFL season.” Well, you could say that every other year too. Warner is always closest to retirement right at this time. As soon as he gets a month out from playing, he gets back to where he wants to play again.

I know two things: When the concussion happened this season — and Warner already was having deep thoughts about being injured the last couple of years, along with those injuries’ long-term effects — Warner became very introspective. I wouldn’t be shocked that, given those considerations along with everything else, Warner would actually pull the trigger and retire.

Then again, he’s got one year left on his contract, and when he signed it, he made it clear he wanted to see it through. That’s always been important to him too. Whenever the Cards’ season ends, Warner will be asked about it (probably a few times). We’ll see if he says “See ya” or if he says something like, “I’m going to take some time to think about it.” If it’s the latter, I think he’s going to have a tough time walking away.

I'm hoping some team wises up and at least hires him as OC in 2010. Whoever that team is, I'll be on board.

Quarterback wise, I'm still hoping one day soon the Rams will draft a guy - I'll take a shitty enough record in 2010, enough to snag a guy like Jake Locker. I really don't care for any guy in this draft, so I wouldn't be too disappointed if we come away without one.

I thought you were a pretty big Philip Rivers fan?

I am.

But not on the same level as Kurt Warner. I'll always root for Rivers as long as he's in the NFL, but I'll follow Kurt Warner, long after he retires. What he does off the field, is far more important than what he's done on the field, past, present or future, if he has one. Normally, I don't buy into sports figures off the field achievements, because they always seem forced, because it's expected - but Warner does it, because it's the most important thing in his life. As much as I'd like to see him play again, deep down, I kinda hope he calls it quits, and moves on.... and unlike some players who can't seem to stay away, I hope he keeps moving on.

I respect Philip Rivers the NFL player.

Assuming Kurt Warner and the Cards hold on and defeat the Packers today, how big would next weeks game against Drew Brees and the Saints be to you? Would it be up there with Warner's Super Bowl win?

And if the Cardinals do beat the Saints and go on to beat the Vikings/Cowboys and the Super Bowl, even if they lose, would this be the best season you've ever experienced as an NFL...er, Kurt Warner fan?

I mean really, you must be a happy man right now. When the Rams were breaking records and competing for Super Bowls there is no way in a million years you thought you'd get the chance to see Kurt Warner in his prime in ten years.

It's the match up I was hoping for, not only because I get to see Drew Brees go 1 and 8, but I honestly don't think New Orleans will keep this game as close as people think. I feared two teams in the NFC, and Arizona beat one of them a few minutes ago. The other, Dallas, should be meeting up with us in the NFC title game.

As a Rams fan, the two superbowls should be the best moments, but seeing Warner bounce back after the injuries that should have ended his career, to prove his doubters wrong, rank right up there. I'm hoping for one more superbowl, win or loss - because just seeing him play - Those are my favorite moments as a sports fan.

As much as I bash Arizona, I'm fucking loving this right now. Upcoming youngsters, continue to run into the same problem every year - an aging grocery store clerk, who continues to play the game on an MVP level.
