Week 3: (2-0) San Francisco @ (2-0) Minnesota

This game is so crucial for us. I think if we can go into Minnesota and shut down (or at least contain) the fearsome offensive trio of Peterson, Favre, and Harvin, then I'm just gonna call it a lock...we're going to the playoffs this season.

In week one against the Cardinals, we held Arizona's Hightower and Wells to 44 rushing yards, and we held the Seahawks to 66 rushing yards. For those keeping score at home, that makes San Francisco the 4th ranked rushing defense in the league. Now I realize that Adrian Peterson is by far a bigger threat than our first two opponents, especially considering Arizona's affinity for the passing game, but it does bring hope that we can keep Peterson from destroying us.

On the other hand, even though we kept Warner under pressure all day, and forced two picks, he still had 288 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Hightower brutalized us through the air, and the Cardinals were in that game until the very end. We did better against the Seahawks, so I'm glad to see the improvement (and consistency) there.

I think this game all comes down to controlling the ball. A steady dose of our ground game with some short passes to exploit the defense as they focus on that ground game. Nice, long drives that get us points, and keep Minnesota's offense on the sideline. If we can keep Peterson on the sideline, and contain him when he does hit the field, I think we can win this game.

Hightower brutalized us through the air.

No, he didn't. He wracked up stats catching dump offs because Fitzgerald and Boldin were locked down. Typical Hightower play- 8 yard catch on 3rd and 15. That's not being "brutalized", that's giving them worthless yardage and making sure the meaningful stuff is taken away.

On the surface, Minnesota looks more talented, but I think that's mostly due to the fact that people don't know how well Franklin has played, and the haven't seen the improvement of the linebackers.

The 49ers wins have been more impressive than the Vikings. Cardinals and Seahawks > Browns and Lions. The Vikings struggled early in both games, and while the 49ers had tight games, it was against appreciably better teams (both of which were dominant against lesser competition in their other games).

This is a big one for both teams. The 49ers can establish themselves as an NFC playoff team, and Minnesota is trying to get a rhythm they haven't had offensively so far, and it's their first game against decent competition.

More importantly for the 49ers, they're entering a very tough stretch, they need this win.

I say Favre tries to push himself for the first time this season and gets picked, 'Niners win 17-10.

Minnesota's at home, the kickoff is early.. Peterson is a million times better than Julius Jones and Hightower.

I don't think it's far fetched to say the 49ers have a chance at this.

I also wouldn't say Min's run defense is better than San Fran's, minnesota gave up 89 and 129 yards and SF gave up 40 and 66.

I think the game will basically come down to which team's HB gets off to the better start against the defense. You have a great back going against a good run defense in Gore vs. Min but you have teh best back going against a great run defense in AP vs. SF so eitherway it's a wash and simply comes down to which of the variables shows up on sunday.
