VSN Poster of the Year
Didn't have a whole lot of time to watch the games this Sunday, but I'll get the ball rolling...
*There were some real clunker matchups this week...Vikes-Cards, Jags-Bengals, Chiefs-Colts. I'm glad we are getting deeper into the year so we can weed out these terrible games and just avoid them altogether.
*Tom Coughlin is beyond help. I don't understand why he insists on putting the game in Eli Manning's hands. Losing at home to Seattle was the biggest upset of the week, IMO.
*The Oakland-Houston game was very odd, but I think Houston really shot themselves in the foot. Oakland didn't play very well, and it looks like Mario Williams might be out for awhile.
*Reports of the Steelers demise were premature. For a team with no offensive line, the Steelers found a way to move the ball on the Titans. Roethlisberger is an elite QB. Still waiting for Chris Johnson to regain his 2009 form.
*The only surprise possibly bigger than Seattle's win over NYG was the score of the Niners-Tampa game. The Niners are playing much better football than any other team in the NFC West, but to destroy Tampa by 45 is ridiculous. Josh Freeman looked terrible. I think San Fran has always had talent, and I think we are seeing how bad of a coach Mike Singletary really was.
*Caught the end of the Chargers-Broncos game. It seems like SD's games are always unnecessarily close. Tebow came in a did some nice things, but his passing was still spotty. I would wait before anointing him "the next Josh Freeman".
*Philly-Buffalo was the only day game I watched in its entirety. Fred Jackson of Buffalo has done great this year, both rushing and receiving. Philly's defense isn't very good. Poor tackling, and surprisingly poor pass coverage. They can move the ball with McCoy and Jackson, but Vick makes too many mistakes and doesn't really help out the rest of the team. His turnovers are hurting the team (although they aren't all his fault), but its really just him making bad decisions in the redzone. For example, the Eagles had the ball 20 yards from the endzone with 8 seconds left. Instead of a FG, the Eagles try one more play. Vick holds the ball, scrambles, then throws the ball as high as possible out of the endzone. All 8 seconds run off the clock.
*Watched the Packer-Falcon game last night. Atlanta was in control, but then Mike Smith once again decided to stop giving the ball to Michael Turner and Atlanta's offense hit a huge dry spell after going up 14-0. The announcers made a big deal about Abraham being out, but I thought the Falcons got a decent enough pass rush. The problem was that Atlanta's secondary couldn't tackle, and their linebackers were TERRIBLE in coverage. Weatherspoon would be running toward the line of scrimmage at the snap of the ball, and Finley or Jones would run right by him and catch a 5 yard pass that would turn into a 25 yard gain. Jeff Tripalette's crew had their usual share of completely bewildering calls. The fair catch interference penalty on Atlanta that turned into an unsportsmanlike conduct on Green Bay was especially puzzling.
*Final general note...I want to really put the clamps on who we call "elite QB". There aren't that many of them. And they do include Roethlisberger. But they don't include guys like Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Mark Sanchez (!), Josh Freeman (!!), Tony Romo, Eli Manning. There is a big grouping of decent QBs, which guys like Ryan and Manning are, but there are only a few elite QBs.
