*The NFL is in the midst of serious transition. We're on the verge of an 18 game implementation. Possible lock out.All in a culture where players are being kept out at any sign of head injury and rules are coddling players to a fault.
The best case for change is a league thats high scoring , exciting , with passes flying around everywhere. Its easy to sell all of the above when this occurs. Problem is in the long run. YOU NEED THE PLAYERS TO DO IT !
Coordinators and coaches arent known to be the flexible types. But whats going on in this league is pitiful.
Week 5 featured 7 QBs with over 40 pass attempts , 3 others with 38 or more.
4 out of 5 weeks one or more QBs have passed over 50 times.
Just for comparison between 91-94 Steve Young led the lead in QB rating every year , and led in TDs 3 of them.
Only once in that span did he throw more than 40 times in a game.
Week 5 only had 2 running backs get more than 25 carries.
GB threw 46 times. They had a 10 point lead going into the 4th. Leading rusher had 10 touches.
NO threw 39 times. It was a tie game going into the 4th.
Leading rusher had 10 carries.
Dallas threw 46 times. 28 passes to 7 runs in the first half.
It was never more than a 10 point game , a 7 point game most of it.
I trash Garrett relentlessly but its an epidemic of terrible playcalling. The entire "running back by committee" approach is a miserable failure. What the point of this committee if your going to abandon the run the instant the top RB gets hurt ? Isnt it supposed to protect against this ?
Rule no1 of establishing a running game. KEEP RUNNING THE BALL.
Rule no1 in getting a RB and an Oline into rhythm. KEEP RUNNING THE BALL.
Asking lineman step back and take on fresh pass rushers 45-50 times a game is ludicrous. It naturally leads to penalties , injuries to QBs , difficult clock management, strains on defense , and RBs who cant get anything started. You can only get away with this in 2 ways. You either have a remarkably advanced scheme , or you have a HOF caliber QB.
There are no such schemes in the NFL and only 1-3 QBs that qualify.
But guess what.
Im not complaining.
Im hoping this means defenses have caught up and teams will F'n adjust and start committing to the run game. Say what you want about the pass but there is a true beauty in seeing a team physically dominate another and have a runner impose his will on a defense. It doesnt happen often enough. Theres plenty of RBs in this league capable of taking over games that arent getting the chance.
FYI run pct in the league is 42%. The lowest its been in over a decade.
*The only other thing I have to say enough with the fucking pink. Every year we have to have teams dress like fruitcakes for an entire month ??
