Week 9 NFL thoughts

*Some real crap games this weekend. Houston, Green Bay, and the Giants played to lose, while Atlanta and Seattle couldn't help but win.

*Ravens might be in trouble. Still a good team, but the Bengals and Steelers have handled them, and I think losing Rex Ryan, Jim Leonhard (who did everything for the Ravens last year), and Bart Scott took their defense down a few notches.

*Kurt Warner tore apart the Bears. The Bears have one of the worst defenses in the league, and all their Salary Cap money is tied up in defensive players who never see the field (Urlacher, Harris, Anderson).

*Drew Brees can't play well in the 4th quarter...LOL WUT?

*The Colts kinda fell asleep, the Texans came back in the end, but they put the game in the hands/feet of Kris Miss Brown. Bad idea. The Colts are a smart team, but I think their undefeated record is a bit generous. They aren't that good.

*The Packers found a new way to lose against TB. Essentially give up 21 points with your special teams through blocked punts and poor return coverage, then, when the game is on the line, refuse to put any pressure on the other team's rookie QB who is making his first start. I'm not really impressed with the Packers 3-4 at all. Clay Matthews has done well in it, but its taken away Jared Kampman, has Raji playing out of position, and GB no longer generates any pass rush...which is the reason the Packers switched to the 3-4 in the first place.

*The Giants were content with a 6-point lead. Perhaps Tom Coughlin forgot that a TD counts 7 points? Props to Norv Turner for being up by 1 point and NOT squib kicking it to the other team.

*The wildcard races in both conferences are shaping up to be interesting. Lots of good teams in the mix who may be on the outside looking in (Giants, Ravens, Chargers).

I think losing Rex Ryan hurt big time, and choosing a guy with one year of NFL experience as his replacement was a curious decision then and even moreso now, but IMO the biggest reason the Ravens defense is average at best this year is because we've gone from Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle outside to Dominque Foxworth and Fabian Washington.

It didnt help the ravens furthermore when Ryan choose Pettigine, who was likely Ryan's successor at DC...

yeah the crowd was booing too...why settle for a FG when you had the momentum changing play with Thomas INT? I understand the holding call but you HAVE to try for the endzone and get over the 7 points because you know Rivers can drive a team down the field.

John Fox has always been a questionable game manager, and yesterday was no different.

-4th Q, over 2:00 left, two timeouts, 4th and 8 from the 42, down 3. Fox passes up the 59 yard FG attempt (despite having a long range K on his roster for this type of scenerio) and goes for it. The odds of converting 4th & 8 are probably about the same as hitting the 59 yarder, so why not try it? The end result of failing is exactly the same, but the success isnt. A successful FG ties the game, yet converting guaruntees nothing. You either need to try the FG, or punt. Going on 4th should be the last option.

-Carolina gets the ball back down 10, and with :40 left from inside the Saints 10, Fox RUNS THE BALL. What!?

-To compound matters, he goes on 4th AGAIN, instead of taking the FG and making it a 7 point game, thus extending the game.

I hate when coaches do this. YOU NEED THE FG AT SOME POINT. Kick the FG, and leave yourself time to get the TD if you recover the onside kick. EXTEND THE GAME. The Falcons did this last Monday, and nearly pulled it off. Most coaches kill all of their time trying for the TD, and either lose on downs, or have no time for the second score. Kick the FG, and keep the game alive.

Do you watch football? Just curious. I didn't think what I said was so difficult to understand. In the past, the Ravens would beat the Bengals and lose to the Steelers. This year, the Ravens are .500 and losing to the Bengals. They still have to play the Steelers twice, a team they lost to 3 times last year. Not exactly the stuff of AFC North Superiority, no?

As a Colts fan I agree with this . We are off to a good start but the record is a bit flattering . We literally have no o-line right now and are talking about changing it all apart from Saturday in the off-season which is making moving the ball very difficult even for Manning . It can also be added that we play our worst football at home (recently) especially in day games .....

New England and Baltimore are our next two games then @ Houston so I guess we will find out more about this team after them games

Yeah I agree with you and Senser. I think the Vikings, and Saints are easily better than us at this point and there are a number of other teams I do not see this team having an easy time against in the playoffs.

The team is below average just about everywhere besides the passing game and pash rush.

How much of the Giants struggles can be attributed to the loss of Plaxico Burress?

They were touted as the toughest team in the league at the line of scrimmage on offense and defense for the last 2 years.

They lose their 6'5" WR and their rushing statistics have been cut in half.

Smith, Hicks, and Manningham are decent receivers but let's not kid ourselves, none of them need to be doubled like Plax.

I honestly don't think that's the main reason they're struggling. I really like Steve Smith - he may not be as physically imposing as Plaxico but he's a better route runner. He's top 10 in the league imo.
