Weis stripped of play-calling at half

Bob Fescoe of 610 Kansas City reports that Chiefs coach Todd Haley stripped OC Charlie Weis' play-calling duties at halftime of Sunday's 30-7 loss to Baltimore.

The Chiefs were down just 10-7 at the half, and didn't put a single point on the board in the final two quarters. Clearly the most dynamic player on the field in the game, Jamaal Charles received just three second-half touches. Kansas City's offense fell apart after news of Weis' departure broke prior to Week 17, and Haley only exacerbated the problem in the most important game of the season. Haley is now believed to be pursuing a puppet-type offensive coordinator to replace Weis, who is heading to the University of Florida.

i remember during the game the play by play guy commented how haley didnt mind weis leaving cause the last time he left a team they won the SB....talking about him going to ND and the pats winning the following year

i thought it was funny, yet odd that the play by play guy would say that

I don't know what it is, maybe it's just optics, but Haley comes across as such a know-it-all dick.
I'm convinced if he didn't have Weis-Crennel this year, that team doesn't make the playoffs. I truly believe they made that big a difference.

Those two were a great pair. Haley I think is there as a HC in name only

Not sure the with/without comparisons with Haley calling the plays but the last few weeks dont bode well for K.C

and dont forget 0, ZERO, Goose Egg, targets to Bowe. He only scored 15 TDs this season. Chiefs should have just knelt on it everytime they got the ball

that game was over before it started. the ravens controlled the ball all thru the 1st and i think the chefs had 1-3 and out series. Then they only had the ball for 1:30 in the 4th....i didnt really watch the 2nd half so i dont know how the flow went, but i do know the ravens had it under control at half time even with the score being close.

this game just exposed KC for how bad they really are. Cassel is not the answer at all and if not for a weak schedule in a bad division the chefs wouldnt have made it to the playoffs.

Pretty odd decision to strip the guy of playcalling duties after one half against one of the better defenses in the league while you're only down by three. If true, I think it shows how dysfunctional the whole situation was between Weis and Haley.

A little nitpick...the Pats' last SB win was with Weis on staff at the end of the '04 season (not the following year).

No one cares about the fact that they only beat 1 team with a winning record all year and that 1 team came back later and beat them by 31 points.

I think the Chiefs lack of success offensively in the 2nd half had less to do with who was calling the plays and everything to do with the Ravens getting in Cassel's and several other of the Chiefs young player's heads. The "moment" proved too big for some of them, I think. I don't think it matters if you make the perfect playcalls, the way Cassel was tap dancing around back there, Chiefs weren't going to move the ball.

Although, the toss 5 yards behind the LOS on 4th and 1 was one of the worst offensive playcalls I've ever seen, and considering I've been a Ravens fan for the past ten years, that says something.

The Chiefs had a nice drive going down to the Baltimore 33 on the opening drive of the 2nd half, and Charles got stuffed on an idiotic 4th and 1 playcall. That play gave Baltimore all the momentum and took the life out of the stadium and out of the players. It was a different ballgame from then on.

I can vouch for this. Fescoe was an St. Louis on-air personality for a while. Good to see he's gone back to Kansas City, probably after being fired for the third or fourth time.

That play gave Baltimore all the momentum and took the life out of the stadium and out of the players. It was a different ballgame from then on.

K.C. wasn't ready for the next level yet, just be honest.
But they certainly have the pieces in place to take that next step in 2011, barring a lockout.
It will be interesting to see who Haley brings in as OC.

Yeah, they are a young team, but they're not a bad one.

They will probably promote somebody from within or bring in somebody that Haley can influence, which means somebody who isn't a very strong candidate. Haley seems hard to work for, so I don't think guys will be jumping at the opportunity.

KC just got beat by the better team.

Anyone that saw the Raiders beat the shit out of Cassel and the Chiefs a week earlier could see this coming. Cassel holds onto the ball too long and the OLine does not do a great job with pass protection.

The Chiefs D is good but real young, Berry got picked on all game. They will only get better and will definitely be a favorite in the AFC West for years to come, but they exceeded expectations this season and should be happy, they had a great season.

They obviously got beat by the better team, but the gap isn't as big as the scoreboard.

The Chiefs got screwed by Charlie Weis. Anybody who watched the Chiefs all year and then watched them vs. the Raiders and Ravens could tell that Weis checked out after he got the Florida gig. The offense was totally different and totally ineffective.

I mean honestly, people want to make a big deal about Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis, but they BOTH got outschemed by the Ravens' coaching staff.

0 targets at Dwayne Bowe and 9 carries for Jamaal Charles? It's like Weis was trying to lose.

I give Baltimore credit, they did a great job taking Bowe away. Ed Reed played over the top of him for most of the game and took away any ideas of going downfield. But are you telling me they couldn't throw a fucking quick slant to him one time?

And I have no idea how Romeo Crennel doesn't adjust to Todd Heap running the same fucking crossing route all game. It was like a 12 year old using a money play in Madden.

Cassel sucks, but had time to throw against Baltimore...even on his INT's. He just made dumb fuck throws. The Raiders have a much better pass rush than Baltimore.

With all that said, yeah, the Chiefs exceeded expectations of everyone. They got their asses kicked and it should be a valuable learning experience for KC's young players. If the Chiefs could ever get a real QB, they would be a dangerous team.
