I just saw the movie, great story.

But as a black person, what are your thoughts? Are you offended at all? Not at all? Glad they did it etc?

It crossed my mind as I walked out of the theatre
 
I didn't see the movie but the previews irritated the hell out of me.

It seemed like they made Oher some giant dumb beast in the movies, every scene they showed in the commercials had him looking retarded. And from what I read he had like 10 lines in the whole thing. I also read something where Oher said they made it seem like he had no idea how to play football in the movie.

Plus it looked like they made the movie about Sandra Bullock which is lame. lI don't think movies about black people do well unless they focus on a white character. Whole movie seemed lame and forced so I stopped paying attention to it.
 
He did say in interviews that he didn't understand why hollywood had to make it seem like he never knew how to play football, but after watching the movie it was just to make it longer imo. Thanks for your input Pandy :cool:

Did you read the book? Everything you listed is true, the guy is (or at least was) dumb as a box of rocks.
 
I just watched it.

He had way more than 10 lines and I didn't feel that they focused mainly on Bullock. I feel it was 50/50 between Oher and Bullock. I enjoyed the hell out of the movie, thought it was great.

and as a black person why would you be offended? I am genuinely curious.

Of course that movie will be pushed about Bullock. Sandra fucking Bullock is an A-List Hollywood star. Is there another in the film?

All those Denzel Washington flicks don't focus on him?

Yeah, the movie made it seem as if Oher was a recluse who never played football before, when in actuality he was a well-known football player before he got to high school.

This must mean she hasn't made you watch Speed 2, yet.

On topic:

I haven't seen it, but can understand why some of us black folks aren't exactly bum-rushing theaters to see this. The very premise just makes it the latest in a long of movies where well-intentioned and/or nearly perfect white people make upstanding citizens of, or otherwise rescue poor, ignorant, and/or just not living up to their potential black (and/or latino and/or asian) kids. You know the ones: Dangerous Minds, Freedom Writers, Antwone Fisher, Half Nelson, Gran Torino, etc. That's not to say there aren't some really good movies to come out of this "genre" because there are, particularly the last two I listed, but I would understand why some might be turned off by it. This movie might even be more of a victim of that sort of backlash because of Oher's apparent displeasure with how he's portrayed.

Still, like I said I haven't seen it but I definitely will, such is my way. When I do, I'll let you know what I really think.
 
I really cannot understand why black people are offended by this movie at all.

The family that did help Michael Oher was white in real life. They were upstanding citizens at the time helping out a kid in need who happened to be poor. Would it make you feel better if they changed the family to a black family or Michael Oher to a white kid?

People are just looking for these type of things these days. It's ridiculous.




Now Michael Oher on the other hand, I can understand being a little offended. They made it seem like he really didn't know how to do much when in actuality, he was a talented football player entering highschool. Not to mention, in the movie he entered the private school in his senior year when in actuality, he entered in his sophomore year.


Overall I enjoyed the movie, and would have enjoyed it if it was a black family helping out a white kid. There should be no race issue with this movie. It's about a family helping opening up not just their home, but their hearts to a kid who needed it more than anything in the world.
 
The people who take offense to it that I know (which all happen to be white) do so because they make Oher seem so much dumber and talentless than he really was. As if he owes everything to the white family that took him in.

One of them read the book, and had a very strong opinion about it. I havent read the book, or watched the movie so I dont have an opinion on it.
 
No one is taking offense to what really happened. Its the supposed embellishments of hollywood that people are taking issue with.
