With the insane popularity of this topic, I'm kind of curious what the majority of people think sim football is. List everything you truly believe makes Madden as close to the real thing as possible. And if it's already a sim game, say so.

Maybe I'll make a master list of what a lot of people say so we can come up with some type of definition.

For me, obvious glitches are not sim. That should go without saying.

As for everything else, I really don't have a problem with much anything. Those who run one play or whatever are only hurting themselves. The FB Dive, I mean, you go into 4-3 Under and it's pretty well bottled up. I don't care for the QB Sneak on short yardage, but I'll just stop you from getting in the situation ;)

Go for it on 4th whenever you want, put players wherever you want, and move guys wherever you want. Use 4WR, use Fullhouse, hell, use em on the same play if you can. Put a 12th guy out there for god's sake. I've never had a problem making my offense go, nor have I had a problem stopping somebody elses, so do whatever you please.
 
SIM is supposedly doing only what the NFL does, like always punting on 4th down or never running the same play two times in a row.

It's stupid to me, just play the game. If I want to run the same play over and over then it should be easier to stop me. At the same time if my opponent can't stop a certain play, I will run it over and over again until they do. I just play the game the best I can, I don't care about how my opponent likes to play.

I definitely want to hear more about this from others who consider themselves sim gamers.

I know a lot of teams will roll the dice on 4th when they shouldn't, and a lot of teams will use the same play sometimes 3 or 4 plays in a row if the defense just can't stop it.

Is that statement by HoustonBoy an accurate representation of a sim game?
 
Sim to me is not taking advantage of a game's flaws (FB dive), and avoiding doing anything extremely unrealistic (going for it on 4th down on your side of the field early in the game with 2+ yards to go).

I don't care if you come at me with the same defense every play, just realize that I'm going to counter with the same offense that destroys it. Play calling should not be limited in sim gaming, as it is X's and O's compared to cheesing the actual game.

There are certain plays (FB dive/WR screen) that need to be monitored, but aside from that everything is fair game to me.
 
I'm gonna definitely check on this tomorrow, but for now, if anyone runs/plays/played in a sim Madden league, I'd be interested to hear some of the rules or restrictions that are in place.
 
One thing that bothered me in other leagues is the definition of "QB rollout". I'd like to hear people's opinions over here as well.

In old leagues, people would drop seven into zone, and have a standard four down lineman rush. They would all crash into the middle, and with a QB like David Garrard I would roll out of the pocket when the pressure hit the middle, because it's the smart thing to do. This would not be an initial roll out, rather I see where the blitz is and they are giving me the outside with no containment so I take it.

Some people think its cheese to even step out of the pocket at all with the QB, I think if you're going to be dumb and have an interior rush on a fast QB they should be allowed to roll to the outside (as long as you don't go straight to the sidelines).
 
To me Sim is just Trying your best to mimic a head coach and or player so that you can give your opponent a good game

don't go on 4th down unless you have to or you believe you should of made it but the ref blew the call

don't run backwards with your qb and throw it off the back foot and do throwaway the ball when your about to be sacked not whine about the other people who do it

i could go on but most people know sim anywayss

If all you do is just pass deep or no huddle all the time or abuse a flaw in the game that is just not sim and no fun either

i dont get what your saying but would me moving to the left be cheese or the right depending on where i throw it or are you talking about running and throwing b/c that just grinds my gears lol
 
I just took a stroll down the street to the GGML, a sim league here at VSN, to see some of the rules they have. I brought back a couple that I find to be contraversal, and I wanted to hear some opinions on these before I share my thoughts.


*You must at least have 10pass and 10rush attempts (Exemptions to this rule can be if your opponent has nearly all of the T.O.P or you are up or down big early - Prof will be needed for both)

*You may never run a no huddle offense unless it is in the final 2 minutes of the 2nd and 4th quarters (Exception- you are down by more than 14) and NEVER after an incompletion!

*We understand that all teams have star receivers but there should be no need for a wr to have more than 50% of your completions

*You cannot play your no.1 or 2 wr at number 3 on the depth chart but you may use the package "strong slot" a COUPLE of times a game

*You may have 1 more CB than wr on the feild unless it is in the last 2minutes of the 2nd and 4th and you are simply tying to prevent them from going long

(If you find the above rule confusing, it basically says that if the team has 2 WRs, you can't use a dime/quarter coverage)

*You may bltiz on any giving play but NEVER 3 out of 3 downs and not the same blitz everY time

*Dont bump a wr off his route on purpose

*Dont abuse press coverage

*Never pinch ur dline when your oppenents in shotgun **Edit** Unless it is a running situation, NEVER Pinch if there is no RB in the backfield.

*Dont run up the score on your opponent - u can offer them mercy at any time if they dont accept b freindly and simply run the ball while taking some of the clock away without breaking rules - Dont keep passing in the 4th if your up by 21 or more EVER

I am apart of that league and those rules are fine. I think personally they are more "guidelines." I mean other than passing all day to your star WR or 10 rush/10 pass they can't really be monitored but most people in the league go by them.
 
Some people will get on here are say "Oh my God you NEED to have 10 passes and 10 rushes but if one is working why fix it?" I hate playing people who just run all game or pass all game, this rule forces people to kinda mix it up. Not passing it to your star receiver all game, that does happen in real life but on a video game they are able to get open a lot easier imo. You cannot really play man coverage in this game because you will get beat everytime. I can elaborate more but I need to go get some lunch

So essentially, these rules are more in place to make the game more enjoyable to you and the league members, instead of being in place because "they don't do it in the NFL"?

I'll buy that answer. And I definitely see where it's coming from; there's no doubt a game against somebody who runs a high school offense is usually quite boring.
 
The thing about the GGML rules is this, the base rules, such as mixing up your plays, substitution rules ect, are to keep the lg sim, other rules, such as limiting WR screen, or limiting QB runs are more about keeping players from abusing one aspect of the game. Running with VY is sim, but running with VY 15 times a game never happens.
Yet other rules are there to prevent some of the more obvious abuses of the a.i. such as taking control of a WR and running into a db to force pass interference.

I personally have never felt restricted by the rules of ANY lg because the way i play naturally has never failed to fall under anyones sim rules. As for enforcing them, the rule set may seem strict, but in 13-14 season of being in this lg, there have only been a handful of player that felt like their game was restricted severely by the rules we set.
 
I just took a stroll down the street to the GGML, a sim league here at VSN, to see some of the rules they have. I brought back a couple that I find to be contraversal, and I wanted to hear some opinions on these before I share my thoughts.


*You must at least have 10pass and 10rush attempts (Exemptions to this rule can be if your opponent has nearly all of the T.O.P or you are up or down big early - Prof will be needed for both)

*You may never run a no huddle offense unless it is in the final 2 minutes of the 2nd and 4th quarters (Exception- you are down by more than 14) and NEVER after an incompletion!

*We understand that all teams have star receivers but there should be no need for a wr to have more than 50% of your completions

*You cannot play your no.1 or 2 wr at number 3 on the depth chart but you may use the package "strong slot" a COUPLE of times a game

*You may have 1 more CB than wr on the feild unless it is in the last 2minutes of the 2nd and 4th and you are simply tying to prevent them from going long

(If you find the above rule confusing, it basically says that if the team has 2 WRs, you can't use a dime/quarter coverage)

*You may bltiz on any giving play but NEVER 3 out of 3 downs and not the same blitz everY time

*Dont bump a wr off his route on purpose

*Dont abuse press coverage

*Never pinch ur dline when your oppenents in shotgun **Edit** Unless it is a running situation, NEVER Pinch if there is no RB in the backfield.

*Dont run up the score on your opponent - u can offer them mercy at any time if they dont accept b freindly and simply run the ball while taking some of the clock away without breaking rules - Dont keep passing in the 4th if your up by 21 or more EVER

*You may pass to move the ball on 3rd down in these situations but then u must dive down



Does the sim community agree that this is how games should be played? What rules do you agree/disagree with?

I don't think any of those rules are sim, except possibly the last sportsmanship one. Can't say I'd ever want to play in a league where you can't bump the receivers, or can't blitz 3 plays in a row.
 
The bump rule isn't bumping from the line, but u can take a cb and bump a
cpu wr waaaay off his route downfeild with no pass interference call. thats what that rule means.
 
I see. Usually I take my safety and bump the slot or TE right of the line, though I don't do it down field. Still, some of those rules don't seem sim to me.
 
i dont get what your saying but would me moving to the left be cheese or the right depending on where i throw it or are you talking about running and throwing b/c that just grinds my gears lol

I'm saying as a QB you leave the pocket and roll closer (but not all the way) to the sidelines. Basic roll outs. You then plant your feet and throw down the field.
 
Alot of the rules for ggml are in place to make a guidline for people and common sense can be taking into account by a commish , the star receiver thing was kind of an 08 rule to stop the constant moss bomb and could be deleted im sure of , most if not all of the league agrees to these rules and everytime one is made theres noramlly a vote on it so call them needless call them waht u want , if 32 people agree on them and decide to play by them then thats great i beleive . Thing is you could say all of them rules are pointless if you want spydr but like i said before 32 people agreed on them and nearly all of them have or will be voted on at one time or another .

I dont think one leagues rules can show the meaning of sim ever in my mind but aslong as the league continues to allow owners to vote to remove or add new rules (majority vote wins) then i dont see a bad thing personally
