Let's go back to 2006 since that's when they should have won the World Series if not for fucking Yadier fucking Molina. :woy:
So Wainwright throws the best pitch of his life, Beltran K's looking.
---
In 2007 they had a good team again, production out of Glavine, El Duque, young guys like Perez and Maine. Their line-up was doing well too (Delgado, Beltran, Wright, Reyes, Shawn Green, Moises Alou and some guys off the bench had good years).
Up 7 games in the division on September 12 over the Phillies. They were swept by PHI in 3, lost 2 of 3 to WAS, took 3 of 4 from FLA, lost 5 in a row….in the 2nd to last game, John Maine pitched a gem as they won 13-0. Needing a win in the final game of the year, Tom Glavine was shit, giving up 7 first inning runs and they blew it. Collapse #1. Fuck Florida.
-----
2008 - the final year for Shea.
Glavine left. Moises Alou had an injury riddled year (although he was awesome when playing). Lo Duca left. THEY GAVE LUIS CASTILLO A 4-YEAR, $25 MILLION DEAL FOR NO FUCKING REASON. They looked into signing David Eckstein -- BUT HE WANTED "TOO MUCH MONEY."
Minaya dealt Milledge (who was no longer a top prospect) to WAS for C Brian Schneider and OF Ryan Church. Would actually turn out to be a damn good trade…They also brought back Angel Pagan from the Cubs.
BUT THEY GOT SANTANA. They dealt Carlos Gomez, Phil Humber and others for Santana, giving him a 6-year contract north of $100 million in the process.
Oliver Perez got a big raise in arbitration.
The 2008 season was horrific for the bullpen blowing a ton of games. They were underperforming and Willie Randolph (and some of his staff including Rick Peterson) was fired in the middle of the night (NY time) on a west coast string by Omar Minaya. Jerry Manuel became interim coach.
Again, the final 14 games of the year they had a bit of a collapse and lost out on a playoff spot in the final game of the year against…yep, the Marlins. The game before, like a BOSS, Santana went 9 innings and pitched a shutout. In the finale, Oliver Perez went 5 innings, 2 runs allowed and the bullpen blew it in the 8th. Story of the season.
------
2009 - Citi Field Year 1
They signed K-Rod, traded for J.J. Putz --- they sent Aaron Heilman and Endy Chavez to Seattle.
They competed over the first couple months of the season but injuries ravaged the team. They fell out of the race late in the summer.
Ryan Church (who the team fucked over, mishandling him after suffering a concussion…effectively fucking up his career) was traded for Francoeur.
Jose Reyes only played in about 30 games. Johan Santana was shut down in August. Practically everyone else spent some time on the DL.
Finished 4th in the division with 70 wins.
-----
Somewhere between these years, they began taking the hit for losing with Madoff.
-----
2010 - THE END OF OMAR MINAYA
Jason Bay got a 4th year (nobody else was willing to give him, not even Boston) and $65 million to come to Queens. Carlos Beltran had knee surgery (I think this is the point the Mets were unhappy he decided to have the procedure done…but he didn't give a shit and wanted his knee taken care of) and didn't return until August.
Ike Davis was called up and was a breath of fresh air at 1B, hitting 19 HR in 147 games. Jose Reyes missed some time early in the year but came back and played relatively healthy (133 G). David Wright played in 157 games and bounced back with 29 HR, was only guy with 100+ RBI. Angel Pagan had a comeback year hitting .290 with 11 HR in 151 G.
Bay only played in 95 games because of a concussion (6 HR, .259 BA) while Beltran played in 64 games (3 HR, .255 BA).
Santana got shafted by the bullpen (1.18 WHIP, 11-9 record). R.A. Dickey came out of nowhere with a 2.84 ERA (1.19 WHIP) in 26 starts. Mike Pelfrey had his best year as a Met with a 15-9 record and healthiest as he was the only starter to pitch over 200 innings.
Oliver Perez was shit.
John Maine was shit.
Prospect Jenrry Mejia was thrown from the rotation to the bullpen and didn't stick. (He later injured his arm and is coming back from tommy john surgery this year).
They were out of it by the time the ASB came (they were in the race earlier but couldn't keep up). In August, K-Rod beat up his father in law in the family room…tearing a ligament in his hand. His season was over. Can't make this shit up. The team wanted to void his contract.
I shit you not. The season ended in a meaningless game against the 5th place Nationals (Mets were 4th). 14th inning at Citi…..guys just want to get out of there, right? Perez is pitching…strikes out Ian Desmond. Hits Adam Kennedy (who steals 2nd). Walks Roger Bernadina. Walks Will Nieves. This fucker walks the next batter before they take him out…they lose the game in the bottom of the inning.
--------
2011 --
They canned Minaya (finally) after the previous season along with Jerry Manuel. With MLB pushing them, they hired Sandy Alderson as the new GM and he chose Terry Collins (who was a Mets minor league exec at the time) to take over the helm.
In December 2010, the Mets brass was named in a lawsuit by the trustees of Madoff's victims as they wanted to get back money. Facing hundreds of millions of dollars in the potential lawsuit, the Mets tightened the purse strings.
In March, they cut bait with Castillo and Perez for good, owning both a combined $12 million or so.
Johan Santana never played this year, returning from his surgery. Jason Bay was crap in 123 games, 12 HR, 57 RBI but a .245 BA….his .322 OBP was 2nd worst behind Angel Pagan's .322.
Jose Reyes played in 126 games and ended up winning the batting title by taking himself out of the last game of the year after one at bat. It was his final at bat in a Mets uniform.
David Wright played in102 games and had his worst year batting .254 with 14 HR and 61 RBI. Daniel Murphy took over 1st because he couldn't play any other position (they're trying him at 2nd this year again) and Ike Davis messed up his ankle and ended up missing over 100 games. Of course, Murphy ended his season injured while playing 2nd.
:duda: Lucas Duda came up and surprised by actually hitting well (10 HR, 50 RBI in 100 G and a .292 BA).
The most consistent hitter was IRONICALLY, CARLOS BELTRAN who returned and was also the healthiest every day player. In 98 games, he hit 15 HR, 66 RBI with a .289 BA and .391 OBP (best on the team). Alderson moved him before the deadline to San Francisco for one of the top pitching prospects in the game, Zach Wheeler.
Pitching wise -- R.A. Dickey ended up being the ace of the staff. Pelfrey was shit. Chris Capuano ended up having a good year as did Dillon Gee. Jon Niese was inconsistent. After they couldn't buy out his deal, K-Rod returned and pitched in 42 games before they traded him away for nothing to Milwaukee.
They finished the year in 4th place for the third consecutive year.
----------
2012 --
Not able to spend any money, they cut $50 million from the payroll because they lost something like $70 million last year. They didn't want to offer Jose Reyes $100 million so he walked.
The lawsuit against the ownership was settled and the Mets really won't have to pay anything (if at all) until 2015 or 2017.
Terry Collins is in the final year of his contract and expectations have the team finishing dead last.
