"When it Was a Game: Leaf's All-Time Tournament"

Inspired by the documentary "When it Was a Game" and some all-time rosters I found in the Roster Vault, I decided to run an All-Franchise team tournament. I have actually spent a few weeks tweaking the rosters I downloaded as I felt there were too many recent players. Plus, I had been doing some research and trying to find the right mix of players. After about two weeks of tweaking, I am content with where I am at in the process.
I used the website thebaseballgauge.com as a reference. I suggest you all check it out as the site is owned by a very dear friend of mine and it is really fantastic.
I am not using all 30 teams. I am using 16 teams. From the franchise with the most World Series wins to the 16th most. Some franchises are tied with 2 (which was the cutoff), at that point, I simply made judgement calls on which teams to include and which teams to exclude.
Also, I went through and eliminated all repeat players. Thus, no Reggie Jackson on the A's and Yankees. There were quite a few repeats and it took some jury-rigging to find suitable replacements and make the rosters work. Believe it or not, this was a lot of work. I did my best to represent each organization well.
As I previously stated, I wanted to exclude some players that I felt were too recent or not good enough. With that being said, I did include some current players who are definitive HOFers and some who had excellent single-season performances that I felt I could justifiably include them. There was no hard and fast rule for player selection throughout this process.
Rules (apologies if it doesn't line up correctly, I copied/pasted from a word document):
The rules outlined below were drawn up before I even touched the rosters. The tournaments initial stages will take place in the form of group play. Four groups with four teams. Each group was selected by using a random number generator with a specific number being assigned to each team.
From there we move to series play. A team must lose two series to be eliminated. The series' will become progressively longer as we move forward through the tournament. The first stages of series play will be 2-out-of-3. We will move to best 3 out of 5 and eventually stick at best 4 of 7. As I am sure you will be able to see, this will be a long process, taking up several months, however, I hope you enjoy it. This is something I have never done before and I really think it will be interesting and entertaining.
- Group play is round robin format
- Each team earns 3 points for a win and 1 point for a extra-inning loss
- Bonus point is awarded to a team for a shut-out victory
- Top two teams from each group advance to winners bracket
- Tie-breaker is least amount of runs allowed (this includes unearned runs)
- Bottom two teams from each group will move to losers bracket
- Both winners/losers brackets will be re-seeded after round robin/group play based off of overall points earned in group play with runs allowed as the first tie-breaker
- Seeded teams will then play a best of 3 series in both winners/losers bracket
- Teams who lose in the best of 3 series, in the losers bracket, will be eliminated from the tournament
- Teams who win in the best of 3 series, in the losers bracket, will move onto the Elimination bracket
- Teams who lose in the best of 3 series, in the winners bracket, will move onto the Elimination bracket
- Teams who win in the best of 3 series, in the winners bracket, will move onto the Championship bracket.
- All brackets will be re-seeded at this point
- The Elimination bracket will feature a mix of teams from both the winners/losers bracket playing a best of 5 series. Winners of this series will move on to face those in the Championship bracket, losers of this series will be eliminated
- Winners from the Elimination bracket will be seeded based off of their performance in the Elimination bracket. Specifically, the highest seeded Elimination bracket team will play the lowest seeded Championship bracket team and vice versa in a best of 7 series
- These best of 7 series will be known as the Championship Series; teams entering this bracket of play with one, previous series, loss will be eliminated after losing one best of 7 series. Teams with no, previous series, loss will still be alive with a series loss
- Teams will be re-seeded for a second round of series in the Championship Series bracket
- Any team with no current series losses will be exempt from re-seeding and placed into the next round automatically
- The Semi-Final/Final round known as the Legends bracket will also be a best of 7 series before a All-Time champion is crowned
- Series losses will carry-over from bracket to bracket
- The DH rule will be in effect for all teams; this allows for more legends to be used on the roster instead of having to exclude some due to a pitchers spot in the lineup
- NO repeat players allowed! (i.e. Roberto Alomar will not be on the Orioles and Indians)
- No rules for a pitching rotation that must be followed and starters can come out of the bullpen

Group A: Braves, Giants, Cubs & Twins/Senators
Group B: Cardinals, Tigers, Phillies & Pirates
Group C: Reds, White Sox, Dodgers & Indians
Group D: Yankees, A's, Red Sox & Orioles/St. Louis Browns
