Where does 2013 Florida State rank historically?

Their resume looks as good as any team in the history of the damn game. Pains me to say, but this team looks like an All-timer.

Certainly no 2001 Miami Hurricanes, but where to they rank among the best of the rest, the 71 Nebraskas, 74 Oklahomas, the 72 USCs, 95 Nebraskas, 45 Armys, etc.

I have no doubt this is the best FSU team of All-Time (edging out 99 FSU) but what say you...

We talking "most impressive season" or just pure dominance? Statistically, they are the most dominant. (Most points of all time, largest margin of victory of all time, ranked top 2 nationally in offense and defense #etc).

But the level of competish isn't quite there. Not their fault, but they beat up on tomato cans for most of the year. I mean, sure, they absolutely destroyed most a dem, but tomato cans they were nonetheless. I'll take '95 'braska and the '01 Canes over them, but after that I'd be hard pressed to find a better squadron. They are loaded at every position. 3 deep at WR and RB, stacked OL, Heisman winning QB, elite defensive line, athletic backers, dynamic secondary #etc.

Just a complete squadron. Jimbo assembled him a once in a generation type team. Easily the best since '01. It's kind of fitting the BCS era and SEC streak ended this way, with the program of the 90s cycling back on top, de-throning the conference of the 00-10s.

Oh come on now, don't do that. Don't diminish the achievement, it was a hell of a call by Jimbo and it sparked a legendary comeback. Sure, they dug themselves a hole early but they more than showed they had the STUFF of champions.

This will always be the knock on them...in my opinion, no one other than BC being within four scores kind of nullifies that. BC themselves, only within 14 of FSU. They destroyed everyone on their way to the title game.

Auburn was a very game team. Justified the #2 ranking. My only knock on Auburn...they are the worst defensive football team to be in a BCS title game throughout the entire era.

If it wasn't for Nick Fairley you'd be saying this about the 2010 Auburn team, he was the only thing standing between that D and shite status. My knock on Auburn is that they would be 6-6 if games were 59 minutes long.

It's not diminishing the title at all, but if we are dissecting them as one of the greatest teams of all time, it matters. Especially when they rolled through a terrible schedule and were never tested. They got bailed out by two special teams plays against a team that I personally think was underrated, but by no means was another great team.

Worthy champions. Great game. Not an all time team imo.

For D, the best number to use, is YPP, Auburn in 10, avg 5.36ypp...in 13, 5.98...that is usually the difference between being in the top half (Auburn was 56 in 10) and bottom 20% (95 in 13).

FWIW, the magic number is 4.

Anything under 4.1 is usually considered great. Anything below 4 is historically great. Florida State and Michigan State were the only two teams in CFB this year under 4.1. Florida State last year had a better D, with 3.85. Alabama in 11 had 3.32ypp, LSU that year had a 4.08 (both played in the title game), Boise State in 10 had under 4 (if not for a late season loss to Nevada, should/would have been in the Nat'l Title Game).

If we are talking one of the best teams ever, i'd have liked to have seen them dice up that mediocre defense and roll them for 50 like they did to everybody else. Or at least put together some dominant drives.

2010 Auburn had a Top 10 run defense despite being such a terrible overall defense. Josh Bynes cleaned up everything at the second level (wasn't a guy that got downhill too much)...and the DBs were actually very very good tacklers. Ethridge and Thorpe stand out from memory.

Auburn's problem was...as good as the DBs were at tackling, they couldn't cover anybody. Teams got huge chunks of yards in the passing game against them. Even in the title game, they let Darron Thomas throw all over them and Jeff Maehl got his. But in the one game scenario, for the title, Auburn's Top 10 Rush D smothered Oregon's Top 5 rated Rush O. Even in their big games during the season, they let whoever throw all over them (accept your boy Jefferson lol - Greg McElroy went for way over 300 in in the regular season finale, Tyler Wilson had a #day against them, etc).

Auburn's 2010 D was just very good team rush D and little else. Fairley was very important...but they still would have had a good Rush D regardless of Fairley (not top 10, but still).

2013 Auburn was just a bad overall defense.

FSU dominated the 4th qtr which Auburn thought they couldn't do because they hardly played 4th qtrs.

I mean,.. they kept pushing that the Auburn coach stressed that in their talk with him before the game.

and yet FSU gets 3 TDs in the 4th qtr which is what they did to all the sub par teams they played all year.

Winston had a bad first half and still never threw an int.

Tre Mason ran for almost 200 yards and they still lost.
