I mean, the last quarterback that I can think of that ever wore the number in the NFL is obviously Warren Moon. I thought Josh Freeman would have changed that (wore #1 at K-State), but then he made his number 5. Is it that quarterbacks are just no selecting the number or is there a rule against it?
 
I think #1 is often reserved for the babybacks of the team, the kickers/punters.

I can't remember the last time a QB wore #1 for the Bears (and lived to tell about it)
 
Forget QB's wearing #1, how about this annoying trend of WR's wearing 11-19?

It looks so bush league. This isnt the SEC, pick a number in the 80's you goofballs.

It's not so much a trend but that the NFL expanded the selection to 10-19. You can thank Keyshawn Johnson for that. Tight ends get to select number from 40-49... is that "bush league" too?

Yeah, true... but, Josh Freeman kinda' broke that "rule" in college and then didn't do it in Tampa. I know there are other QBs in college who have worn #1 as well. -shrug-

Sticks Sheffield is bringing it back. He's also the first white QB to wear #1 since Jeff George.

It's funny because playing in high school football in Atlanta, it seemed like the QB was almost always #1. I agree though that the trend has not carried over to the college or the NFL much at all.

I always thought of it as a prestigious number that some folk just don't pick. It seems that all the smaller numbers are 'prestigious' and at least somewhat rare, which is why the college/HS players do it. . . it makes them feel cooler or something.

Might as well. No sense in preventing Wide Receivers from wearing #23 when RB's can wear #23 and still line up in the slot and with Devin Hester's move from DB to WR and keeping his number, might as well make it uniform across the league.

QB should always be from 1-19
RB should be from 11-49; 80-89
TE should be from 11-49; 80-89
WR should be from 11-49; 80-89
OL should be from 50-79

This would make a lot more sense than the current system. What would you do for defence? Anyone can wear any number?

I agree with that, Also, it would make it easier for a guy like Vrabel when he played as a TE if he wore an eligible number.
