Why is ESPN so obsessed with the Chargers?

I've heard no less than 10 people on ESPN say that the Chargers are either: better than the Colts, the team that the Colts should be afraid of, or the most dangerous team in the AFC. I'm convinced ESPN producers are forcing analysts and SC anchors to say it. It's even spread and I saw Tony Dungy on NBC say the Chargers are the most dangerous.

I'm not saying the Chargers can't beat the Colts. I know they've done it in other years, and there's no guarantee they'll even meet this year. My question is just why? I rarely get to see them play, so someone please explain to what the big deal is about the Chargers?

I think simply it's because they are the hot team right now, undefeated in December in Philip Rivers' career, and have for several years been a team that's supposed to go deep in the playoffs.

The Colts on the other hand, will likely never shake their can't do it in the post-season aura.

hell, in all likeliness people will eventually forget it. Everyone thinks of the 85 Bears, but have completely forgotten their playoff failures in the 80's.

I'll put it as simple as it is. Indianapolis is boring, we don't have receivers that moss you, we don't have runningbacks that break big runs every game, we don't have defensive players that talk a lot of shit.

Indy is Classy, boring, and San Diego isn't.

Sure hope they don't lose to Tennessee tomorrow night, No Analyst is going to have anything to talk about.

2. I don't feel like researching it right now, but I'm pretty sure San Diego has two playoff wins over Indy in the last handful of years.

3. After a poor 2-3 start, San Diego is on a nine-game winning streak...only the Colts have been that good in the last nine weeks.

Besides...who else do the Colts have to fear in the playoffs? San Diego has pretty much cemented themselves as the #2 team in the AFC...and so, that's naturally the team the commentators talk about as possible up-setters of the Colts.

Like I said it's spread. Dungy said the same stuff on NBC. Then I was on yahoo sports and saw the same thing. I guess I could stop watching/visiting every place that covers the NFL which would also solve the problem.

The funniest is when they say "SAN DIEGO IS ON THE LONGEST HOT STREAK IN THE NFL!!!"

Completely forgetting that Indy is on a 23 game regular season win streak and 14 game win streak this season . I'm not sure if it's because people think Indy are boring and are expected to do this or everybody is thinking we will lose a playoff game anyways .

They do . They also have just as many post season problems as we do . Well actually they have worse ....at least we managed to go on and win a superbowl one year

They came out and played like shit then finally hit the form that was expected (maybe not all 9 wins but still) . When Indy keep winning every week it's .... "so what it's Indy . Peyton Manning is expected to do this" .

Nobody . I highly doubt Indy "fear" anybody in the playoffs . San Diego is the team that we are most respectful of probably

Didn't that dissappear after Indy won the Superbowl 3 years ago? The Chargers, on the other hand, are the team that always finishes with the best or 2nd best record in the AFC and can never make it anywhere in the playoffs.

They may have shaken it, if not for the following two years where they had great regular seasons then looked flat in the playoffs and went out in their first game.

Perhaps San Diego does not share this same aura despite failings because they are way out West. Eastern teams always get more coverage, praise and scrutiny than those on the West.

Yeah ESPN a few analysts had SD #1 on their power rankings, that's ridiculous to me. Indy is the best in the AFC hands down, and San Diego never does what they should in the playoffs. They're the AFC version of Dallas.

chargers have won in the playoffs the last two years (against the colts) and have great 2nd half regular seasons ... when was the last time dallas did either of those?

Colt fans .. like it or not, the Chargers have had your number the past several years.

Until this changes, much like Romo in December.. ESPN is going to just hammer this story over and over and over.

While I agree ESPN is getting kind of out of hand with it, the Colts and Chargers are the only teams that are looking like Superbowl contenders right now in the AFC. Combine the Chargers' hot streak with the recent success they've had against Indianapolis and you're setting your self up for a pretty good AFC Championship game.

Our offense is attractive.. We go for the home run probably more often than any other NFL team and pick up huge chunks of yardage in single plays.. I think we're an exciting team to watch which probably helps the hype..

It's obvious that we'll be the top 2 seeds in the AFC and both host home games in the Divisional Week - I know our history in the playoffs isn't great but I think we'll beat any team we face in the Divisional Week (mainly considering we are at home. If we had to travel to PITT or NE or even BAL I would be worried), and I think the Colts will do the same -- all signs point to a Chargers @ Colts AFC Championship game - and we all know who have knocked the Colts out 2 years running.
